Amazing book. Great story, continually developing characters, historic accuracy in very engaging format. There is no prejudice and all parties of Great war are pictures with deep understanding to their motives which let to such catastrophy. Gave me a lot of insight on how pillars of our current society came to life. We cannot thank enough to all those 10 millions who sacrificed their life to help those old structures fall and start change of our society towards equality and freedom. And it has been only 100 years (compare to thousands of years before) and we still have so much work to do. A must read for everybody.
Ein unglaublich weitreichendes Buch! Es ist beeindruckend wie Follet es schafft, historische Fakten aus drei verschieden Perspektiven so gut zu einem mitreißenden Buch zu verpacken. Ich freue mich schon den zweiten Teil zu lesen!

Der Anfang, ungefähr das erste Viertel, ist stark und fesselnd. Im Laufe des Buches lassen die Charaktere leider immer mehr an Glaubwürdigkeit und Kontinuität missen. Einige Motive, gerade was die Diskussionen unter den Figuren angeht, wiederholen sich.
Alles in allem liest es sich schlicht wie eine Aneinanderreihung der Ereignisse rund um den 1. Weltkrieg - was mir persönlich gut gefällt aufgrund meines großen geschichtlichen Interesses, aber dem Anspruch, den das Buch zu Beginn an sich stellt, nicht gerecht wird.

Ken Follet never disappoints me. And this book is not an exception. I'm a passionate of this period of the history so I have enjoyed every page. Willing to read the other two.

¿Qué sabía yo de la primer Guerra Mundial? Muy poco, quizá me lo enseñaron y lo olvidé, hoy aprendí esta parte de la historia de la mano de personajes increíbles, cada uno centrado en sus circunstancias y objetivos de vida, al leer me fui a buscar más de la historia, aprendí. Estos libros enseñan de una manera didáctica donde uno se apasiona por querer conocer y entonces los acontecimientos no son fechas, son sucesos que marcan al mundo entero.
Phenomenally epic book! I can’t wait to read the rest of the trilogy.
In general, it was good but some sections dragggggged, not sure if I can continue the series.
And, also I have doubts in the author's ability to write women. If I was an English woman living in post-WWI Berlin with my German husband, I'd struggle too but wouldn't console myself with the idea that I could slip him the tongue and undo his pants anytime I wanted. FFS.

Una forma muy interesante de conocer la historia. Me ha encantado el estilo de Follet. Personajes muy bien construidos. Amé a Maud & Walter, a Ethel, a Billy. Odié a Lev. Pero lo que mas me ha gustado es como entrelaza la ficción con la realidad. Con ganas de empezar el siguiente!

It took me a long time to read this but I kept up with it despite the stack of books I had in my library bin. It was well worth it. Follett has created wonderful characters to love and almost-but not quite- hate. Through these characters we live through and learn the causes of World War I and see the rise of Soviet Russia and a glimpse into the blossoming of Nazism.
I will read the 2nd in the trilogy after reading a few books that are due back at the library soon!
