I'm still in shock—maybe even haunted—over everything that happened in this book. I found myself in a constant state of fear for the characters, even after it ended, even after it's been a week since I finished it.
Although they were victorious, I didn't feel like celebrating. There were just far too many lost and ruined lives. Finnick's and Prim's death pained me the most. They were my favorites, and they had so much of life post-Hunger Games to look forward to. I appreciated that Katniss didn't let Coin take over. She was too close on the road that Snow took—maybe even already there, only framed a little bit differently.

A nice way to wrap up the series (minus the epilogue, which I hated), but this is still my least favorite book in the series. As usual, Katniss is running around as bland as ever angry at the world. Some heartbreaking deaths and a shocking moment I never saw coming, but once again Finnick and Johanna carry this book.

Audiobook - I find this book extremely powerful. When I was younger I read it simply as a slightly slow action novel, but now it feels entirely different. This book shows the struggle of a girl thrust into the midst of a war, being treated as nothing more than a glorified puppet, and how she deals (or doesn't) with her new role. The last few chapters I find absolutely heart-breaking. However, the epilogue feels like it falls flat, and I can't help but feel it is a borrowed ending from Harry Potter - I feel like the epilogue slightly takes away from the final chapter, which feels like a perfect epilogue in itself. On the other hand, this book as a whole is a very emotional, action-packed finale to the trilogy and the rebellion Katniss started with a single spark.

“What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again.”

I am in pain after rereading this. Somehow I have that same feeling I got when I read this for the first time as a 12 year old. Just that emptiness in my soul after reading such a bittersweet ending. This book was full of war and politics and rebellion which is why it was so boring to me as a kid, but 10+ years later and I love it even more. There’s so much loss and the ending does an amazing job of portraying how Katniss and Peeta have been damaged beyond repair, but still have hope for their future together. They suffered a lot, but are braver and will make their kids braver for it.
