Nope that wasn't it. Over the top, the characters, especially the female ones, were hollow and oh my god those ‘sex’ scenes? Not to be That Girl but I'm gonna be That Girl: as I read them I kept thinking that those scenes had to be written by a man. And it's true! JP Delaney is a pseudonym for a male author who is riding on that psychological thriller written by women wave by only writing under initials. I mistakenly thought the author was a woman but as one person started to ‘play with her nipples like on a radio’ (quote is paraphrased) I knew that this must have been a man writing this.
I probably will try out the first novel by JP Delaney (which is not the first novel of the author) but I have a hunch that the same weird sexual undertones are there on each page, too.

JP Delaney is fast becoming one of my favourite authors; I loved The Girl before and was over the moon when I received Believe Me. This book tells the story of Claire who ends up being a part of a police operation to capture a potential serial killer, the issue is....she doesn't think he is guilty
Claire was a unique narrator, with the story sometime going into the form of a script (which does not present well on an e-device but there is not a lot the author can do about that), as well as the reader never being entirely sure whether she is telling the truth, or if she is even slightly reliable as a narrator. Patrick was just as intriguing, with the uncertainty of who is telling the truth creating a claustrophic and nerve-wracking read.
I really enjoyed the premise of the book, even though I had to suspend my disbelief a number of times with regard to the police procedure. It was interesting to see the writers take on mental health, although that section of the book does create a number of questions that are not really resolved and I am still questioning the end of the book and whether it is the truth or a part of Claire's scripting and not a real event. This is one of the two criticisms I have with this book (they both relate to the same section) as the other is the sudden change of pace that happened at that part of the book threw me completely out of the narrative and it took me a while to get back into the book. I semi wish that the scenes relating to mental health had not taken place (am really REALLY trying to not post spoilers) as that would mean that the pace of the book was consistent throughout and it would have been amazing.
However, that ending was amazing, and there is a subtle hint to it that I missed meaning I was kicking myself when the reveal happened. I thought it was brilliant, with the twist and the reveal being done incredibly well as well as raising some interesting moral questions. A great read that I would recommend.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for sending me a copy of this book fin exchange for a fair and unbiased review

The perfect thriller to read if you’re looking to get out of a reading slump! Perfectly paced, well written, untrustworthy characters with a very over the top, spectacular ending
An out-of-work British actress in New York City, Claire is struggling to pay her bills any way she can. Posing as a decoy for a law firm to trap cheating husbands, Claire is approached by the police after the wife of one of her targets turns up dead. The police need to her to get the husband to confess to murdering his wife. But quickly, the line between pretend and real life blurs and Claire no longer can tell who she is.
This was 3-1/2 stars (rounded up as one does) for me. I found it actually confusing, which I'm sure was the intent, but for me it was so confusing that I'm still not really sure what was real and what wasn't. No one was who they presented as and honestly, not one of them were likeable. I wasn't truly invested in this storyline and that made it harder for me to keep up with what was going on. And there was a lot going on! It seemed like there was a twist everytime I thought I got a handle on what was happening. I really enjoyed the previous book by JP Delaney "The Girl Before" but this one did not match up to that one for me.
