A cozy YA fantasy about a young witch who goes to stay with her aunt in rural England. Strange phenomena are happening in the town, worrying the witch community and beffudling the normal folk.
I have not read the main series ([b:Threadneedle|51867529|Threadneedle (The Language of Magic, #1)|Cari Thomas|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1600271165l/51867529._SY75_.jpg|76364743]), which didn't hinder my enjoyment at all. This provides a self-contained view into the world and its characters. I also think the main series is about a different witch.
This novella is about Rowan, a teenage witch who feels like an outsider at her school in London. Her eccentric aunt whom she is staying with in the country is a hedge witch (specializing in hedges). In classic coming-of-age fashion, Rowan befriends other teenage witches, develops a crush, and starts growing in confidence.
It's a cozy fantasy with a small English town, a friendly witch community, tea, and hedges. Not much happens and even the climax is quiet. It reads like a '90s YA, [a:Diana Wynne Jones|4260|Diana Wynne Jones|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1597798776p2/4260.jpg] style, which always makes me nostalgic.

I love these characters. Rowan is the absolute best. I would've loved to see more of Winnie's friends and the shrooms. Just so much plant magic to explore and I absolutely love it. Witchy and plants is fantastic and the silly goofy vibes continue in this one. Im so excited for the next book. I cannot wait. I wouldn't mind being a plantbased witch myself. Even if it's in a silly town deep in Wales. 9.14 on CAWPILE TW// fatphobia
A cute story about growing up - Rowan's story. In the Threadneedle world, but not part of Anna's story. Really for younger, perhaps pre-teen audience.
