Favorite L’Amour story yet. It’s idealistic, but that’s the point - the founding principles of America have a sweeping appeal to the mountain man inside all of us.

Just a fun read, not rewarding on an intellectual level.

As with all westerns, the main character was heavily covered with plot armor, so nothing fell him. It never ceases to annoy me how the protagonist in stories like this seem to draw a hoard of followers everywhere they go. I don’t understand what was so amazing about Sackett that men were constantly throwing their lives into his hands. I guess there was just some sort of magnetism about him that did not communicate across the pages. I just don’t understand How he and Abigail fell madly in love in the two interactions they had before the feelings begin. But again, this is a western.

Very enjoyable. A short read. I may have found a taste for historical fiction. What better way to learn about history, than with stories?
"Sackett's Land", the first of its series, is an historical fiction book set in 1599. It follows the journey and dreams of a common man, from England to America.
The prose uses a first person perspective, with old-fashioned English, both in vocabulary and grammar. I think it was well accomplished, as it fits the context of the story's era, without sounding pretentious.
Plot wise, I've found it highly rich and entertaining, especially considering its short length. It has plenty of action and twists, history about England, and the depiction of a non-colonized America, with native Americans, animals and beautiful landscapes. The characters are likeable as well, some even funny. Even the guns used fit the era, as well as the diet. I would say that it has only one fault, which is that everyone seems to befriend the main character and help him until death the first time they meet.
Overall very enjoyable and I will definitely continue with the series.

Solid L’Amour book. Not in my opinion one of his best, but it introduces my favorite series—The Sacketts. This is my second time reading. I read through the Sacketts years ago as a teenager and wanted to revisit them. As usual for Louis L’Amour, there is a lot of fast paced action and the good guy always wins, but those are his tropes and why I loved them when I was young and wished for a daring young man to sweep me off my feet like those in his novels.
