(DNF) I could not do this today. I’m still going to read Kristoff’s more notable series, but the jargon in this one was used every other word, not to mention extremely cheesy. It’s just so hard to follow when you have no idea what is going on due to the word choice.

Qué alegría poder volver a leer a Jay.

No he conectado con ningún personaje.

Loved it just as much in the first time - Jay truly is a mastermind and knows how to weave a fantastic intricate story! And once again I adored the Russian revolution influence! Fantastic!

So I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book as it’s so far out of the realm of what I usually read. However, I felt the same way about the Illuminae files and I ended up LOVING it.

This book also starts off a bit slow, and I was struggling to get into it until the chapter of Zeke was introduced - then the story really kicked off!

I loved our main cast of characters particularly the lil robot pup Keiser, I love how they made their own little family.

This book perfect example of Kristoff’s ability to perfectly execute plot twists! Lemon revealing that she’s the deviate, Eve actually being Ana, Ana not actually being Ana but a robot replica. All of these were great plot points that I didn’t expect.

The ending had me so shocked that I can’t wait to read the sequel and see where this story goes!

* Has Eve/Ana joined the dark side now?
* Is human Ana actually still alive?
* Will Zeke end up with human Ana or robo Ana? Or will it turn out that Ana’s father made her a second Zeke to keep her company (or maybe the Zeke we know is a copy just like the Ana we know)

Hands down one of my favourite thing about this book is The Romanov bread crumbs, from the first chapter I noticed the similarities but thought perhaps it was a coincidence but no it was definitely on purpose! It was so incredibly clever and it just made me love this story even more.

Kristoff is truely a magnificent writer and I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel!

I definitely recommend this book, even if this isn’t a genre you’d usually pick up - give it a go! It’s definitely worth it!

BUT KILLING KEISER? NOT COOL BRO! NEVER KILL THE DOG EVEN IF ITS A ROBOT!!

As a longtime Kaufman/Kristoff fan, I've been meaning to read LIFEL1K3 since its debut, so it was nice to finally get around to it! This is also the first book I've read by Kristoff himself, and I truly enjoyed getting to experience his solo work.
There was a lot that was good about this book, notably the world building. I'm a sucker for post-disaster Earth story, and intelligent robots, and I thought the world of LIFEL1K3 blended these wonderfully. I got real Mortal Engines/Mad Max vibes from it all! I also think the way Kristoff explains how the world as we know it fell apart and began to piece itself together again with tech and mech pieces. Also, the characters were mostly very fun, especially Lemon Fresh! Y'all, I ADORE her. I want to read ten more books with her as the main character. I thought Eva was pretty neat, although after a while I felt like she sort of flatlined? Maybe it was the repetitiveness of her internal struggles of identity, but near the end I began to not care as much about her. However, I DO love the friendship between her and Lemon! I care about them deeply as friends, and I'm eager to see more of them.
So all that being said, I think the pacing of this book was way off. It's sort of a bumpy ride, and the action moments in here felt forced to me in a lot of places. The character of the Preacher honestly felt like a waste of page space to me, too. Then when the characters have quieter moments, a lot of what they talk about is also very repetitive. I think the focus overall could have been sharper and more streamlined. The plot, although leading to a fairly predictable encounter, meanders all over the place and leaves a bit to be desired.
I am planning on reading the next in the series, mainly because it sounds like it more Lemon-centric and I here for that! Crossing my fingers for a slightly more focused sequel!

Apart from buying new books I also like browsing secondhand bookstores. Especially De Slegte, in the big cities in the Netherlands and Belgium, quite often has a really nice selection of books. Once in a while I stumble upon a book from my wishlist for a very reasonable price. This was one of those books. I was doubting a little if this book would be for me, but I did enjoy other books by the author so it was on my wishlist. Last week I decided to start reading.

It was love at first sight! This book was amazing and everything I want my science fiction novels to be. I was quite positively surprised too when I discovered that this story was an Anastasia Romanov retelling. I of course don't want to give everything away, but the moment our heroine started to have flashbacks where her name was Ana and her entire family was shot, it was quite clear what had inspired the author to write this story.

However, this is far more than "just" a retelling. Especially because of the science fiction elements. This entire book takes place in a futuristic world where the line between robots and humans is becoming vaguer and vaguer. Our heroine fights in real life robot fights to earn some money for her sick grandfather and once she discovers she has a special power the robots and AI's are coming from literally everywhere and the story becomes more and more interesting.

I also really loved the finale of this novel! This book is clearly building towards this big moment and the author absolutely does take the time to get there, to make sure we're excited and to then throw in an amazing surprise. And although the book doesn't exactly end with a huge cliffhanger, it doesn't exactly end with a happily ever after either. It's quite clear the real journey has only just begun. I can't wait to see where it's going.

There were some interesting things about this story, but overall I just didn't care for it. I found it quite boring. I'm kind of interested in what happens next, but probably not enough to read the next book.

I didn't love it quite as much as I thought I would but it was super enjoyable nonetheless. Honestly, I think I was just subconsciously hoping this would be on par with how mature Nevernight is; Lifel1k3 was still really gritty and gory but definitely done in a more YA fashion.
As always, Jay's style of writing didn't disappoint. I loved the setting and the vibe - being a big Fallout fan I was in my glory. I loved our badass main ladies and their friendship so much. My only small complaint was how Ezekiel felt a tad flat compared to Lemon and Eve personality-wise.

I'm sorry but wtf just happened? *exhales* This book was definitely not what I was expecting, it's so much more than what the synopsis says.

So this book got straight into the action, it was fast paced and interesting with colourful characters. I loved the dynamic between Lemon and Eve as well as Cricket. Their little disheveled family was so adorable. The setting was rich and well described, I could perfectly picture the world.

The romance wasn't my favourite part of the book as I feel as though there was no development. We never really saw Eve and Zeke become friends or really fall in love. It was almost insta-love as they automatically just loved one another I just wished there was a little more of a back-story. But I mean now that I think about it that kinda makes sense considering the plot twist later on.
The friendship I loved between Lemon and Eve, they just bounced off one another's energy and I loved their humour. Lemon's got to be my favourite character.

Okay but seriously the last 100 pages were so good. Both Lemon and Ezekiel's revelations were insane! I could kinda see where Zeke was coming from in shooting Eve but holy crap I had no idea Lemon was the real one with powers. And at the very end when Eve sent Lemon and Zeke away was heart breaking. How can she not be the real Ana! Wtf! And now she's teaming up with Gabriel??? What the shit is gonna happen.

Over all this was a great novel but the one problem I had was that Ana's memories got a bit repetitive, the same lines being said over and over. Other than that it was pretty good and makes up for Jays other not so good book Illuminae. XD
