One of the best historical fiction books I ever read. They portray the Yetta, Jane, and Bella really well. But, I was really sad at the ending.
Such a good book with twists and turns. I cried when I read the end, but then again it was late and I was tired and stressed, so it might’ve just been that.

This is a reread of an old favorite, but every time I read it, I forget how good this book is.
Margaret Peterson Haddix knows how to pull on my heart strings. This book is about immigration, and worker's rights, and women's rights, and friendship. Bella and Yetta and Jane feel real, feel like girls I could know today, and it's exactly why this book hits so hard.

This book was a great example of historical fiction. It takes place in 1910 when women were still treated as second or third class citizens. The story focuses on the lives of three young women- they are in their teens but are already living on their own and taking care of themselves. Haddix really made me feel the terror and frustration of living on their own in a world that didn't appreciate their work or any of their contributions. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand women’s lives at the turn of the last century or who enjoys a good story. It is based around the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fires. The book starts out with a young woman speaking with someone who survived the fire; we don’t yet know her first name. We learn that two of her friends did not survive the fire. Then the story jumps to 15 years in the past and we are introduced to three different women. We know that only one will survive, but have no idea who. I spent the rest of the book trying to figure out who would survive and wishing they all could. It is a very sad and powerful story that everyone should read. Anyone who enjoyed Hattie Big Sky or Monkey Town will like this book.
Great historical fiction about immigration, socialist causes and problems at the turn of the century in NYC!
Oh, geez. So good. Excellent history plus strong female characters.
