Delightfully terrifying and suspenseful. One of my favorites I've read in awhile.
slow-paced

I'm going to need a while to digest this one before I even TRY to write a review or explain it. But, quick and to the point: read it.

When I began reading Night Film I was not sure what kind of adventure that I was embarking upon.

Reading a bit into the book, I had a hard time trying to keep up with everything and I was insistent upon predicting what was going to happen next.

First:

Night Film

That was the defining bit for me for a long time during this book. It's not a bad thing, but sometimes when tyring to find answers to life, we sometime entertain individuals who "aren't all there". Poor Ashley, this is how she made me feel.

THEN!!

Witch Craft in Night Film

At this point, I was engrossed and couldn't be pulled away. I couldn't believe it. Like Seriously?! Alright, Ms. Pessl. I'll follow you down this rabbit hole, but it better take me somewhere good.

AND IT DID!
I really enjoyed the suspense, It kept me at the edge of my seat and I can honestly say that I was scared when Scott was scared. This book had me at work during my lunch break like 'Oh no, Oh no! Oh..... No..."

Eventually, I just knew that Scott was losing his ever loving mind. Then, We learn, he's not.

I am okay with how the story ended. I'm glad all things ended well. I am also thoroughly impressed with the 'lack of love story' even though great relationships had been formed. I enjoyed the plot and character development. What I take away from this 'experience' is that it is always captivating the people you meet learning their struggles and their stories. As a lover of fairy tales and fantasy, I feel for Ashley. She managed her world as best she could, fought as strong as she could, and lived as boldly as she could.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Even though, some critics, have considered this a sophomore slump. Having not read Pessl's first novel, I'm impressed and am looking to read her first attempt. Hopefully it is just as enjoyable.

I'll give it the mystery labeling only because there is a semblance of mystery surrounding Ashley's death. There was an overall atmosphere of something creepy and unknown.

The writing was entertaining, minus the excessive use of italics. I loved Nora as a character. I found myself writing down her quotes. Scott was kind of annoying. Hooper was just there.

The complexity of the human mind and resilience of the human spirit. The desire for terror. The desire for love. The desire for emotional experiences that rip you apart.

I'm sorry but if I waste my time to read over 700 pages there better be a satisfying ending. or any ending.

I really want to give this a 4.5 out of 5 rating because I haven't read a thriller as captivating as Night Film in a long time, and I knew almost halfway through reading that I was going to love this novel. And I do. My main qualms come from some corny dialogue between our main characters and some of Scott's unbearable narration (likely on purpose, but still grating nonetheless). And yet, I kept going because it's just so enthralling. I can see why the ending would disappoint readers, but I personally love the ambiguity of the situation and how it casts a shadow over the whole story that precedes it. Incorporating audio-visual elements also heightens the experience; you can tell Pessl really put tons of thought and effort into the world-building and lore of Stanislas Cordova, an unholy mix of Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, and Quentin Tarantino. I need more thrillers with this kind of complexity and shrouded mystery.

Meh.
Meh.
