4.25 stars. Wow! This was not what I expected. Someone on TikTok described this as gay lord of the rings, and I see what he meant… but it wasn’t fully that. I do see the Lord of the rings inspo and queer rep, but it was its own unique book that stands on its own. I read this book purely because my brother read it, and he wanted to buddy read/discuss. I was a little bored for about a third of the book somewhere in the middle, but damn did that ending make up for it. I liked the characters for the most part, especially James. I am definitely going to read book two. I’m lucky it comes out in a couple of days!

This should not be labeled as YA, the story is written in a distinctly juvenile tone. Also, awkward pacing. Overall, disappointing since I enjoyed the captive prince.

I really liked this book! The story was so good. Unfortunately I read this while in a reading slump, which is why I think I haven’t been able to enjoy it to its fullest. Will definitely reread again, but!!! that ending! I want to read the second book immediately!
Taking a .5 star off because I felt like at times (especially in the middle part) information was just dumped on you. Felt like a bit too much, maybe? The characters were nice and I looooved the diversity, but there weren’t any characters I actually loved and felt a big connection to. Maybe that’ll change throughout the series, though!
I wasn’t a big fan of the romance …until I realized what was happening with Will being the Dark King Reborn and Katherine being The Lady’s descendant. Awesome writing.
