I was motivated to restart this after I saw a comment on reddit that was singing praises about this, but I forgot exactly what the comment said. And I am so glad I did.
Spoiler because the comment was talking about unreliable narrators and OMG THE ENDING??? When I tell you that I was left reeling- my poor sleepy brain (because yes of course I binged this at 1am on a work night) had to flash through the events of the whole book and I was STILL shocked.
The last 30% of the book was done so well, and the final line? Chilling.

0.5 star off because it’s a bit of a slow start and I do think perhaps it could be made a bit more concise BUT the payoff is SO GOOD. The world building was so unique and vivid and honestly, even though I listened to the audiobook for the first 60%, I HAD to know what happened and started reading the book so I could go faster.

All the characters started to grow on me - I wasn’t sold on Violet when we first got my POV because I was surprised it was multi POV, and she seemed to naive but she really grew into herself throughout the book

Unfortunately no amount of sassy evil blond twink with a tragic backstory could save this book for me

will und james
entwickeln wird!! freue mich auf jeden fall auf den zweiten band.

I am absolutely blown away. Incredibly written with captivating twists. Most YA books I read as an adult leave something to be desired (usually because I lack the flexibility, naïveté, and imagination I had as, you know, a young adult) but this transcended expectations. You can tell it’s well written from the start, even if it does take some time to suck you in completely. And then it really gets going, and you’re in. And then it ACTUALLY gets going. I thought I knew what was going on from the very well crafted hints the author dropped but I was wrong in a number of creative and incredibly satisfying ways. Another reader may get it all right from the beginning, but either way it’s remarkably enjoyable to watch the twists unfold from the characters’ perspectives.

The title and worldbuilding started off feeling like it was a riff on The Dark Is Rising series, but it becomes its own story. The three main characters struggle with how to be good people, or at least do good in this world. Of course, it's complicated by family expectations, blood, destiny, and the choices we make along the way;

I looke forward to reading the next book.
