DID NOT FINISH

DNF

Incredible prose

I just couldn’t care less abt the plot or characters lost interest after 50 pages

But the prose !!!!! Mwah

did not think i would read the word “catamite” in a YA book but here we are

the more i sit with this book the more it squicks me out? honestly i don’t know if ill read the sequel. i wasn’t going to until the very last page of the book, and the dynamic that will and james have going on is like… interesting, but theres so many ways that it can be done that would make me uncomfortable so i don’t know if ill read it

DNF, 2.5 stars

List of things wrong with this book:
- predictable
- absolutely everything - character relationships, plot, events - was rushed
- the title of the book
- everyone’s names: I’m sorry but hearing stuff about the Dark King and then him being called Simon is fucked up

List of things good:
- the writing was good enough to fool me into thinking there was a plot until at least over 60% in

Sad sad sad that I will not be continuing, and I was sooooo excited for this

This book would’ve been a tighter, more succinct entry into this series if it ended at page 329. It felt like the perfect enough ending to further the story a follow up book since we already established SO much and pretty much experienced a third and fourth act within those pages.
Instead it seemed like we weren’t sure that we were going to continue the story (which, cmon Pacat we know you’re a series girlie) so they bloated the book. 450 pages for the first entry is a task, and thats a big part of why it’s a 3.
As for the story? Interesting enough and overall good enough character story points to follow the plot devices alongside them to experience the twists and feel satisfied with them. There never any point felt like any one character was truly the standout protagonist: Will felt equally as important as Violet and eventually Cyprian, even knowing that the central “power” was for Will to awaken too, it felt like natural enough relationships between them that they support and empower each other.
I’m interested enough to read the second entry even tho I now have the understanding that these entries are going to be a commitment
