couldnt get into this for the life of me

Heel veel bekende fantasy tropes en een paar goeie twists, maar ik blijf een beetje koel achter. Benieuwd naar het vervolg!

I am obssessed! The world building and the characters were all so well written I was so captivated the entire time reading! And the twist at the end ! I had sort of figured it out but not fully so I was completely blown away!! I cannot wait for the sequel I ordered it while reading this one so it better come soon. I definitely recommend this book

I wanted to give this more, but I felt like it fell a bit short from where the story wanted to go. If there were a few more chapters written about the characters' relationship with each other, I think I'd give it a four. Like Justice and Violet, Emery and James. I wish we would have gotten more from Violet and Cyprian. It felt like everything was rushed if it wasn't about the Dark King.

Then there was this: Katherine and Will's relationship was really hard for me to understand. Will taking a liking with her came from nowhere; how and where did he even get the clothes he had on when he met her? How did he know how a proper gentleman should act? Everything about them was sudden — both how it started and how it ended.

And with James. I loved how right from the start, them getting these feelings of oldness was a thing and how it connected them together. And I get it: how you may fall for the first person who shows you kindness after all these years but blind devotion? (But then again, it might be the Dark King talking).

The world-building is very, very good, though. Also, I love everything about Will: how he acts, his personality, the way he thinks. The way people never know what to expect from him.

So I give it a three. I think it has the potential to be so much bigger than it is. (I will be reading the second book immediately, though. I'm already hooked.)
