The biggest crime this book committed was that of being boring. I did not care about the characters, the plot, or the world, so I can't justify giving it a higher rating.

I can’t believe this book sat on my shelf for Y E A R S. Will, Violet, I’m sorry I didn’t come for you sooner!
Dark Rise is classified as a YA fantasy/romance; I’d argue that this book is far more complex and intense than that description gives it credit for. It’s a story about Will, a dock boy running from a messy, grief-stricken past full of fear and mystery. It’s a story about Violet, a strong-willed girl looking to prove herself and find a cause worthy of her unending loyalty and dedication. It’s a story about bonds, about magic, about the inevitability of good vs evil, about discovering who you are and who you’d like to be despite what you’re told.
I gave this book 4 stars, because it’s a little bit of a slow start and some of the mystery/twists stay a little too murky and confusing, but I HIGHLY anticipate its sequel will earn 5 stars.
Written in third person, this book follows multiple perspectives- Will and Violet are our main voices, but we hear from many characters by the book’s end. This can be confusing in places, but also gives us insight into much more of the story than we’d otherwise see. It’s a creative take on dark vs light, evil vs good; who are the good guys, really? Are the bad guys bad because of what they do, or because of what we say they are? This novel asks many of these hard hitting questions.
Set in a magical, historical version of London, the creepy mist-covered-hills and dirty-city vibes give the book an edge. The fancy London clothes mixed with old world livery worn by many of the characters, the juxtaposition of swords and rifles, trade ships and war horses, death and vibrant life; it’s a book full of paradoxes that give it depth and keeps you guessing. I really felt swept up in the battles and struggles that kept me engaged the whole time. We watch our characters discover themselves and grow, become different than was expected of them, which I love (underdogs forever!).
If I could ask for more, it would’ve been; a little more internal monologuing, slightly more info on the Steward legends and stories, and a little faster of an intro to the book. I loved the lack of romance; this is very much not a romance focused book, which makes total sense for the story, and I really enjoyed. I’m not opposed to romance growing later, but I love a good base of story and plot set before someone randomly declaring “I love you!”.
Super excited to read Dark Heir! And excited to commit to a series…but sad I’ll have to wait for book 3. Hope to see you back in the Hall soon…

Fesselnde Fantasygeschichte mit vielen Überraschungen
In "Dark Rise" von C. S. Pacat geht es um Will, der ein einsamer Junge ist, ohne Familie und immer auf der Flucht. Bis er eines Tages gefangen genommen wird – von einem mächtigen Mann, der seinen dunklen König, einen bösen Herrscher aus längst vergangener Zeit, wieder zum Leben erwecken möchte. Damals gab es noch Magie auf der Erde und die Welt wurde von den Stewards, den Kämpfern des Lichts, geschützt. Sie sind es auch, die Will schließlich bei sich aufnehmen, nachdem er von einem Mädchen namens Violet gerettet wird. Gemeinsam möchten sie herausfinden, wie sie die Rückkehr des dunklen Königs aufhalten können. Dabei treffen sie auf die verschiedensten übernatürlichen Kreaturen, darunter auch auf den Jungen James. Er löst heftige Reaktionen bei Will hervor und schon bald erkennt dieser, dass er selbst eine Schlüsselrolle in Bezug auf die vergangene Welt innehält …
Die Handlung von "Dark Rise" konnte mich von Anfang an fesseln! C. S. Pacat ist wahnsinnig begabt im Worldbuildig, sodass ich komplett in die Handlung hinein gezogen wurde.
Außerdem wimmelt es in der Geschichte nur so von überraschenden Wendungen, weshalb das Lesen niemals langweilig werden konnte. Dadurch wurde der Spannungsbogen immer aufrecht erhalten und ist zum Ende sogar stetig gestiegen. Wenn ich einmal "Dark Rise" zur Hand genommen hatte, dauerte es lange, bis ich fähig war, es wieder zur Seite zu legen.
Ebenso fesselnd wie die Handlung, ist der Erzählstil. C. S. Pacat schreibt dramatisch, intensiv und sehr bildlich. Das verstärkte zusätzlich meinen Widerwillen, das Buch zwischenzeitlich zu pausieren.
Die Charaktere sind vielschichtig und gut ausgearbeitet. "Dark Rise" wird aus verschiedenen Sichten erzählt; hauptsächlich aus Wills, aber auch aus Violets und Katherines – ein Mädchen, das später im Roman die Bildfläche betritt.
Was mir sehr an den Figuren gefiel, ist, dass sie nie einfach nur "nett" waren. Sie alle hatten ihre Abgründe und Tiefen, die die gesamte Geschichte etwas düsterer und spannender gemacht haben.
Was mich jedoch manchmal in meinem Lesefluss gestört hat, sind die vielen Namen. Es gibt einige Figuren und sie tauchen alle zu anderen Zeiten das erste Mal auf. Zu Beginn fiel es mir deshalb schwer, mir sofort alle Namen und die dazugehörigen Charaktere zu merken, aber das hat sich im Verlauf gelegt.
Das Cover ist der absolute Hammer. Ich bin generell ein Fan von der Kombi aus Schwarz und Gold, aber "Dark Rise" hat das ganze noch einmal auf eine ganz neue Stufe gehoben. Zudem passt die Ausstrahlung perfekt zum Inhalt. So ein tolles Cover; da werde ich das Buch garantiert mit dem Buchdeckel nach vorne ins Regal stellen!
Kommen wir zum letzten Punkt, den ich noch behandeln möchte: den Gefühlen. Wie oben schon erwähnt, strahlt "Dark Rise" oft etwas Düsteres aus, das ich GELIEBT habe. Wills Emotionen haben mich auf jeden Fall berührt und ich konnte sie gut nachvollziehen.
Fazit: "Dark Rise" ist ein wahnsinnig toller Roman des Genres Dark Fantasy mit fesselnder Handlung, tollen Charakteren und einer fantastischen Welt. Ich hoffe sehr, dass bald das Datum für Band zwei festgelegt wird, da ich unbedingt wissen möchte, wie es mit Will, Violet, James und Katherine weitergeht!

As I said to myself at the beginning of this book; I will not press any expectations onto Pacat as I got through this. Pacat's other work (Captive Prince) is one of my all time favorites, and I was excited to see one of my favorite authors branching out to a fantasy setting that involved magic! I knew that the premise of this book would be a lot different than the mature setting of Captive Prince (considering that Dark Rise is young adult) and so I went in the novel with no expectations and a positive mindset.
And Oh My Gosh was I blown out of the water. The writing style has changed, not for the better or worse, but it has a noticeable change in it regardless. I sort of figured out the plot twists by the middle of the book when all the characters were introduced, but that did not deter from the enjoyment of the novel as a whole.
