Badly written. Info dumping and yet doesn't explain reactions. Very 2 dimensional
This follows Raven who is Queen of Seolia. She was given the throne by the former king, and yet she has no idea why. However, her reign has always been peaceful and the people love and adore her, as she does them. Rumors start spreading, though, about dark magic returning causing many to panic and also wonder if the Queen has dark magic since some rumors mention that as well. Turns out, she does have magic that only she and her advisor Cade know about. She meets a stranger called Zeke who she's drawn to unlike anyone she's ever been drawn to and tries to find out who he is while also trying to find out who is spreading the rumors and stop them before she loses her kingdom and a war starts.
I really liked the world and the character building is very good as well. I wish there was more information about the magic in the world, especially since we only really basically read about Raven who has magic, and really cool magic! She can control three elements and literally becomes and embraces them as a person, basically like a split personality, but based on elements.
This first book seemed to really focus on learning about Raven and who she is, about the world and the magic. Raven is a great character until we read about her love life. That's where the story kind of fell flat for me. I really like the story idea, and the world and the magic system, but the romance was just not for me. It is very steamy, and I like what she has with Zeke, but then things happen that cause this to turn into a love triangle that just confused me and I was not a huge fan of it. That's just me though, I'm sure many would love the romance in this book, it just wasn't for me.
Overall, I did enjoy the story, the world, and the magic, and I am curious to know how the story continues since it kind of just ended suddenly lol. I received a free digital copy to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own. 3.5/5 ⭐️

i really tried but i didn’t like where it was going. mmc zeke was making questionable and unreasonable choices that affected fmc. their relationship had no basis other than mysterious “twin flames” bond. i liked the idea of the magic and how it was executed with fmc literally having split personalities which wilded different elements. that was the only unique and interesting aspect of the book.
i obviously didn’t like cade. he was controlling and was acting like fmc’s boyfriend with no boundaries between then , even though he was her advisor and just a friend. but i also wasn’t fond of mmc zeke , who suddenly became possessive of her and jealous of everyone, even though he had just arrived to the island and had no right to behave that way.
i generally didn’t like that cade&raven’s relationship was more than “queen and her advisor”. lines were too blurred. i faulted raven for that or her aunt when raven was younger. she should’ve put some boundaries between her and cade. it was unprofessional otherwise.
it bothered me that zeke was sifting through raven’s memories without her knowledge and consent. he generated this great plan to manipulate fmc so he could protect her but couldn’t he be just truthful with her and explain the situation so they move on together?
raven didn’t seem like a queen. she did nothing “queenly” all day every day. she forgot about big events. she never questioned zeke and his motives. i didn’t respect her as a ruler. neither did cade it seemed.

He was like the moon fighting against the sun. Shadows stuck to him—shadows I wanted to cloak myself in. (One of my favorites lines in this book)
I enjoyed this story and found the main character, Raven, very unique. I love the magic she holds and felt as if it was written in a new way.
The world-building was well-written and kept me entertained throughout. I felt there were a few times the romance was a bit too much, but the fantasy was great! I’m excited to see how Raven grows even more in the next book in this series.

I absolutely loved this book when I read it the first time, but there were some things that definitely bothered me this time. I can deal with Raven’s seemingly shifting personality- she has a lot going on & too many people keeping secrets for her to possibly deal with everything logically. What I couldn’t stand, or more specifically who, is Cade. This douche canoe is the absolute worst. There’s a lot of dark themes and trigger warnings should be checked beforehand. Zeke made some decisions that come back to bite him in the ass, but I feel like it did help Raven in some ways too. I felt like this version was more fleshed out than the previous & I did really like that aspect. I’m interested to see where the story goes and how it’s changed.

Do yourself a favor and just read it.
I hate comparing it to ACOTAR but it throws you into the action of the character development and world immediately, you are introduced to love interests immediately, the dilemma is introduced immediately and the book is so well written. I am not sure why this book isn’t more talked about or promoted!
Book Tok/Bookstageam really dropped the ball missing this book

You know that feeling when you're about halfway through the first chapter and you feel like you've been reading for hours? That all encompassing feel of 'I am immediately lost in this book?' This. Is. It. I was so completely obsessed with this book from the beginning, and I still can't get the story out of my head. It lives there, happily rent free for the foreseeable future.
Each character in this story had such incredible depth and character arc that it kept me reading until the extremely early hours of the morning. I liked that each character had such a complex and mysterious backstory, and nothing is as it seems. The dual POV gave you a bigger picture than some of the characters had, but it really made me fall even harder for this book, and had me screaming into my kindle trying to get them to listen. Obviously, that didn't work.
This book has the perfect blend of light moments, steam, character growth, mystery, magic, and all the feels. You will feel pain for the characters, love, betrayal, and the steam legit coming off your kindle.
