Liked the beginning and the ending, in the middle it got a little boring in times. But overall a very good and emotional (in a good way) book.

Tisaanah has worked her worked very hard to achieve her goal of getting enough money to buy her freedom from her master. When she finally does she is shocked to learn he had no intention of ever letting her go. As he is in the process of beating her to death, she loses control of her power and kills him. She flees the city and goes to another city that she thinks will help her.

Upon arrival they agree to help her on one condition. She must train with Max and pass the exams that all of their kind must pass. Most get their whole lives to accomplish what she has a few months for.

Max does not want to train her. He has spent most of his life trying to not be part of society. He has no intentions of rejoing the military, but as he works with Tisaanah he finds that he can't let her go.

Definitely a slow burn on the romance. It's more fantasy with romance in the background. Love seeint how strong Tisaanah is after the horrors that she faced as a slave.

First of all, it’s so good! It is definitely one of the top books I’ve read so far and definitely one of those I’ll re-read at some point. The opening scene was everything! Fell in love with the book mostly thanks to the opening scene.
On the bad side, the world-building could’ve used a little bit of more explaining, or more scenes where it would be showed more (in my opinion!). Sometimes, I couldn’t grasp the concept of the country overall, actually. The orders were a little bit confusing as well to me from time to time...

However, the story-line, the characters, the writing... it was all so easy to fell in love with. It's on the longer side of books, but it was a really quick and easy read. And very enjoyable! Very easy to get lost in the moment, forgetting about the surroundings. I also liked how balanced it felt between the romance of main characters and the actual plot of the book. And after a long time, I actually hated every villain that was showed to us, like sincerely hated them.

Also, the closing line of the book? Can't wait to read the next one!

I found this to be difficult to connect with. Ultimately when the book finished I did enjoy it, but I found it to be very hard to get through.

I love the world and characters in this book. The author was able to create such dynamic characters with lots of depth. The story is slow at first but by the middle really picks up with a few surprises that I did not see coming. I loved the depth of the plot and how the curveballs made sense to the story as each layer was reveled. Very curious to see what happens in the next two books.

I went into this one a big fan of the author's other works - and I did really love this story. This biggest thing that stopped this one from being 5 stars for me was the romantic plot - i just wasn't feeling it. It's probably a me thing! But the world, MCs, and plot are killer, and I'm excited to read the rest of the series and see where it goes.

Where to begin. After this story picks up, it is a complete whirlwind. I really enjoy Broadbent's writing and am in love with the characters in this already. Tisaanah is strong and brave..and funny. Max offers a good balance with his brooding sarcasm. Also, love Sam. Interesting magic woven through a compelling story that is both beautiful and deadly.
