First, this book had some of the worst world-building I’ve come across since the Divergent series. I had no idea what the continent was like bc there was no map. And if this was a good book, I would not need a map,  because I would understand the lands. I know what you’re thinking- that’s not always necessary for the first book! But no, wars and tension between areas was a main conflict within the novel. I didn’t understand if Ara belong to the Orders? Were the Orders ruled over or their own entity? Where was her homeland? How was Threll her homeland? I thought she was brought there by slavers (not a spoiler it’s the first chapter of the book).
It's one of the most convoluted fantasies I’ve ever read. And the characters each told you each other’s traits instead of the author actually showing them.
Then there was no clear understanding of the magic system. Who has it? Who doesn’t? Why? Why not? How do you know when your magic is spent and how long does it take to recover? I should not end the book being unable to tell you how the world works in any way. I don’t even know how large it is or how many countries/regions/territories there are??
Who let this horrible imitation of Aelin Ashryver Galanthnius be published?
I will NOT be finishing this series. I just finished this book and can barely tell you what happened.

I went into this one a big fan of the author's other works - and I did really love this story. This biggest thing that stopped this one from being 5 stars for me was the romantic plot - i just wasn't feeling it. It's probably a me thing! But the world, MCs, and plot are killer, and I'm excited to read the rest of the series and see where it goes.

The beginning of this book was a pretty straightforward plot that I was enjoying, with characters a little archetypal for romantasy but I still liked them, but then the story totally went somewhere I never predicted, and every character went so much deeper, and I loved it! The longer the story went on, the more I became invested and excited and the momentum kept moving faster towards the ending until I turned the page and was shocked that it was the epilogue! I highly, highly recommend for any fans of ACOTAR or other romantasy!!
