Easy to read, sweet, idealistic escapism. The kind of book you read in three days and it leaves you smiling. Sometimes a bit cringe. Casey McQuiston really knows how to write good side characters.

Like most of the queer media that I experience, Red, White, and Royal Blue didn't magically come to me when I needed it, because the truth is, I've always needed it, and always will need it. And if I told you that it was everything? That, squeezed into in such a campy, ridiculous wrapper, could be a story full of such heart and soul, pouring out with such force that all I could do was stop and bask in it? I hope you'll believe me. I haven't felt this full of grief and (more importantly) joy from any media since I first discovered given a few years back. Yes, it's inherently cheesy. Yes, it's a weird alternate timeline fanfic, to some extent. And yes, I sobbed and sobbed as I saw myself viscerally explored through Alex and Henry-- their struggles, yes, but more importantly their little pleasures. McQuiston, you fucking magician.
Oh also, fun statistic, this was the first eBook I've ever completed, and considering how glued I was to my phone and Kindle, it's clear I've been missing out.

I truly believe this is one of the worst books ever written and I don't understand why people love it. Tell me why? It’s not the writing (clumsy), it’s not the humor (cringe), and it’s definitely not the plot (drivel). The only thing left is the concept and the gays, which is hardly enough reason to hand out stars. For me, it’s a hard zero. I should have DNF it.
The love story is cute albeit super over the top. The politics is just too biased and blatantly preachy to get any more stars from me.
