Emily Henry absolutely pulled at my heartstrings and left me in a happy puddle of tears as big as Lake Michigan. The way each main character challenges the familial trends in relationships that they are convinced will continue to be upheld by them but also want to write a different story, it is truly something to be admired.

An excellent piece of writing and definitely worthy of a five star rating. Romance is not dead and Emily Henry is the doctor ensuring it remains alive and well, even if just to provide a “happy-for-now”.

The concept is what drew me to this and the execution was ultimately disappointing. Think I'd have preferred more of a literary fiction vibe than a romance vibe here. The actual act of writing and how these two people differ is barely explored and this leans too heavily on romance tropes instead.

The dark and broody male lead who's actually a soft muffin struggling with his damage underneath feels cliche here. Ditto the constant and mind-numbing descriptions of how handsome he is. The only writing tick that was more frustrating was how often Henry had to break in and tell us how much the female lead's heart fluttered anytime the guy did anything. There ultimately feels like there's so little substance here despite some really compelling plot and emotional threads.

Was really interested in exploring both his trauma and her grief, but it ultimately feels like we never do in any real way. I will say, I do appreciate that this mostly avoids the misunderstanding as plot motivator up until the very end, where it makes no sense and feels forced considering how open and honest the relationship is before that.

This is a quick and relatively fun read, which I guess is all you can expect from the title, but I do wish this had more to it.

apparently i need romance books in my life now and i'm not mad about it.
pop-culture references? i love. (t-swiffles, thelma and louise, etc.)

I loved this book so much. Not only do I love the dynamic between the romantic pairing, but combining with the added plot points of what and how they are writing, I couldn't put this book down. As someone who loves romance but is very reserved when it comes to *spice* I found this book very readable, there were only two short sections that were passed my comfort level that I skipped over. That being said, I don't feel like I missed out on the developments in the relationship or sexual tension in general. The writing was so readable but not overly flowery or redundant. And on top of that she described Gus' eyes hundreds of times and I never got sick of it. I always knew exactly what she meant with what she wrote. I just loved it a lot.

This book has so many elements that work for me. Two people trying to get their lives together, deal with (or maybe just ignore) past traumas and grief, and navigate getting to know each other after kind-of hating/judging/being attracted to each other in college. Here for the small town interpersonal entanglements, delightful side characters, misinterpretations (even if I wish characters would just talk to each other), with a side of writer's block shenanigans.
