It is a love story, obviously, but is also a story about family dynamics, lies, and learning to live with knowledge you never wanted.
There is the perfect balance of romance and angst. The ending is lovely.
Honestly? It was just a really enjoyable book.

this book was really cute!! in my rating of the emily henry books i have read, it comes 2nd, right after book lovers and before people we meet on vacation. this book i noticed the emily henry pattern more than the other two… her love for enemies to lovers/golden retriever and black cat romances. i eat these up but the only thing is that the love interest always have similarities to my previous ~toxic~ situationships. So I was a little hesitant at first getting to know Gus more, scared it was probably going to promote some toxic dude being saved by hopeless romantic girl and he would keep disappointing her. But this was not the case at all! Gus grew with January, opened up his heart to her and didn’t push her away. He helped her build the world she loves so dearly in the realistic way he sees the world.

I absolutely love the plot of them switching genres like that is so unique and cute. I like that they still added their own touches to their books while still experimenting in a different genre!

the setting, as always, is one of my fave parts… maybe i need to start picking books just for the setting and the vibes bc a lake beach in michigan is so unique! totally different than where i thought beach read was going to be set, bc ocean beaches have such a different vibe than lake beaches. it was so cozy and warm, not a in a fall winter way which is what i think for cozy settings, but in a summer way: cute houses by the water, camping, reading on the deck, close small town, etc, etc

fave scenes probably had to be them giving backstories to the people at the carnival and sitting at their windows across from each other writing their books together and holding up notes “tswift you belong with me” style! that is so adorable and probably my fave part of their love story… so wholesome

Emily Henry the woman you are. This really put up a fight for my favorite romance book of all time.

January felt so real as a protagonist and GUS. OH MY GOD. Need me a man like that. I also thought that their relationship built at just the right pace, not too rushed but not drawn out too far either.

Just overall a banger of a book.

“Dammit, R.E.M. was right: Every single person on the planet had to take turns hurting. Sometimes all you could do was hold on to each other right until the dark spat you back out”

Have you ever come across a book or something in a book that resonates so much with you, your past, your present that you’d considered maybe you could shove this book into people in your life and say “I can’t segregate my thoughts and put them into words but this book gets me”? That’s exactly what I felt like doing

It’s unnerving sometimes to answer simple questions people ask like “How are you?” because “I am good” sounds like the biggest lie you are ever going to say because you are not fine yet you don’t know the ways you are broken to let them help, to let them fix you so you simply lie to them and to yourself.

The reason I am going on with my TED talk here is because I believe this book resonates with most of the people at some point or at several points as you read because we all hold on to the good and try to shove the bad and the ugly parts deep down, when you read it, it will make you feel this quote from the book is true - “It’s okie to show the ugly stuff sometimes, because it’s not going to ruin the beauty of your entire story”

To be honest I picked up this book to be my “easy read”, I’d expected a chick-lit routine and was fully braced to forget it once it’s over. I have done it, judged the book by its cover so I am here advising you all not to do that, it’s a very interesting mix of genres with underlying deep messages wisely hidden behind a creamy layer of rom-com.

I did not cry my lungs out or sat there staring at the walls once I finished the book, but I felt heard, I felt spent, I understood a little part of me better,I felt drained-a good one like after a good therapy session with good cry!
