I knew the overall gist of this story already from various adaptations, but it was nice to read it in full to celebrate the coming of spring. The characters are all so endearing in their own ways and the setting feels so alive through Grahame’s words. I also really enjoyed the narration by Andrew Wincott, as he was excellent at differentiating each character.

Middle school english, 2006

I was really excited to read this but, sadly, I didn’t enjoy this book at all. While I appreciated the gentle tone and the pastoral setting, the storyline felt thin and fell flat for me, and I struggled to stay engaged. The episodic structure made it feel a bit aimless and monotonic, and I couldn’t quite connect with the characters or their adventures.

That said, it was a fairly quick read, and I’m glad to have finally crossed it off my list – it has been on there for a while now. It’s not something I see myself returning to, but I understand why it holds nostalgic value for many readers.

Probably not fair to judge a book when the central conceit of anthropomorphized creatures is something that you dislike. Pretty much read it because I was given it and may as well get another classic under my belt. Oddly, Mouse Guard and Red Wall I liked okay, probably because usually there are a multitude of personalities and characteristics within one species, whereas the notion of the “nature” of a particular animal being homogenized is just lazy and annoying to me. But also: I am not a child, so what does it matter?
