The Horse and His Boy

C.S. Lewis

3.7 AVERAGE

There is very little I can say about the Chronicles of Narnia that people do not already know. At first glance it appears to be a story about a group of children that find their way to a magical world and they adventures that they go on while there. However that isn’t really what this story is about; like so many of Lewis’ works of fiction it is really about the story of sin, evil, a savior, and redemption. Each character in the story is a representation for someone else or some other trait in the larger story of humanity and creation. While the story is certainly written for a younger audience the writing is still of an exceptional quality. While I wouldn’t recommend these to just anyone, given their setting and more whimsical nature, I would recommend them to any children and anyone that enjoys more “lighthearted” fiction.

SPOILERS: has nothing much to do with the series but it was really good! i liked the plot and i actually didnt realize that he and corin were twins. duh. haha. i really loved it, it was a tale of growing up, but also of racing to do whats right, even when its hard.

potenzialmente il mio preferito !

And if I said this book was better than The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe? Then what?

Seriously, I like this one way better than both books that came before. Lion witch and wardrobe was written to be a standalone story for your kid niece without any connection to a larger world, basically a homemade fairy tale, then Magician's Nephew scrambled to build a mythological setting and historical canon for the world that suddenly needed a lot of fleshing out, and this book can just relax and explore without the pressure to deliver. Narratively, tonally, thematically, Horse and His Boy (IN MY OPINION,) is so much better.

My favorite as a kid and my favorite (so far) reading the series again at 30. Love the middle-east style setting, Aslan's unseen influence throughout all aspects of the story, and how separated it initially feels from the rest of the series. Oh, and talking horses

I did always like this one as a story although the Calormenes are just really blatantly generalized middle eastern stereotypes and everything about that culture is portrayed as bad or at least lesser than the "beautiful white Narnians..."
Even the food which was actually kinda funny...When Shasta arrives in Narnia he's like "Ah finally....bread and butter" lol
So thats....yeah not great.

Anyway, I also feel like the Aslan is Jesus allegory is WAAAAY more overt in this one than in the lion the witch and the wardrobe.

So yeah I'd probably give this like 3.5 but I'm knocking it down to 2 for the racism. This is really an "of its time" disclamer book
