This is probably the first book I’ve read where the main character is flawed and makes decisions that are antithetical to what you’d expect from your average protagonist in a fantasy novel. RF Kuang skillfully takes us through Rin’s most times impulsive decisions that are shaped from the circumstances and hurdles she’d faced in her life. And I don’t blame her. It’s clear that her decisions are going to have really bad consequences but I also see why she would arrive at such conclusions. 

The book gives a very informative, interesting and graphic insight into Chinese history and politics through fiction. However, I wish RF Kuang included time stamps to better reflect the exact time frame certain events were taking place. It would’ve made picturing events and scenes in the book a bit easier.

This book is a terribly wonderful reflection of the pressures and actions committed in a time of war. But PLEEEASE, if you are uncomfortable with war time atrocities be mindful reading this.
