I didn’t expect to be fully immersed  like I was. There’s extensive world building and war and heartbreaking sadness which is not something that I typically like to read. I wanted Rin and Altan and Kitay and the Nikan to win. It left me feeling like what the hell are they fighting for?! Is it ever worth it?

This book is an emotional roller coaster ride. It’s so informative yet imaginative. It’s powerful, as someone who researched the Rape of Nanjing for college it was at times hard to read. Kuang did an amazing job of inserting history into this book.

I genuinely don't know how to feel or what to say about this book properly. All I can say coherently is that the characters were what truly made me like this book and with a main character like Rin I can't help but to immediately want to read the rest of the series in one sitting.
