ok first of all read the trigger warnings for this because i did not and i was like wait this is so dark! *sees that one of the tags for this book is literally “dark”*  ah yes it makes sense now.

when i started this book i wasn’t super into it if i’m honest. but i’m telling u— PUSH THRU those first 200 pages. it gets so good.

the stakes are SO FRICKEN high and every choice comes at a cost — and the characters don’t always make the right (or most morally sound) choice. but who am i to say what is immoral ?? they’re so real and flawed and broken and i love them all. <3

on one hand the world/culture/religion are so rich and vibrant (the psychedelics may contribute to this) but on the other hand everything is so dark and grim.

the story is based on chinese history and culture which makes it even more interesting and just adds another layer of complexity that i can’t wait to look deeper into and learn more about.

read this book but be aware that it is not always pretty.

This book is beyond incredible. The writing is gorgeous. Rin is a compelling character who experiences growth and corruption simultaneously throughout the book. The supporting cast is fantastic. The worldbuilding is utterly fascinating.

But this is a VERY heavy read. It deals with intense subject matter in a pretty unrelenting way. Please make sure you’re ready to handle some seriously triggering content before you read it.

For me, the four stages of reading The Poppy War were as follows:

1. Wow damn this is a really good fantasy book with a military academy setting.
2. Oh this is a book about religion and spirituality and power where those things are channeled through drugs.
3. Actually this is a book about genocide.
4. OH SHIT OH FUCK OH MY GOD.

I really only have one critique, which is that the part where Rin gets her period for the first time was executed kind of messily. I get that the arrival of her first period at age seventeen and her reaction to it and general ignorance of the subject was meant to express just how ignorant and malnourished she was in Tikany, but because she still doesn’t care for her body at all when she’s at Sinegard, it didn’t quite land for me as a reader.

Weird period thing notwithstanding, if you want to read a beautifully crafted military fantasy that explores war and genocide and imperialism and loss through one character’s part in all of it, this might be the best one there is.

Honest to goodness stunned by how amazing this was. Like, I knew it was going to be great from all the pull quotes and reviews, but wow. Just bought the sequel and can't wait to read it.

This book was so incredibly dark but so well written. The world building was done so well that it truly felt like reading a story that has actually happened. It was definitely gruesome, though. Check your trigger warnings. If you can't handle detailed descriptions of extreme violence, sexual assault and literal genocide, this book isn't for you.

I like following the point of view of a girl in need of power. We see her becoming more and more poweful and respected. We see her follow her anger and her desire of power. The only thing I liked less was the fact she she is to stubborn to listen to real good advice.
it was obvious that following the path of the god was a bad idea, but she dit it anyway. Now all we have to do is wait and see her regret her new deadly powers
