This book deals very explicitly with a lot of heavy themes around genocide, (sometimes forced) drug addiction, child abuse, colonisation, and war, and it bordered on getting too shockingly violent for me (particularly with the descriptions of physical violence and mutilations). Although I felt the main character's journey was predictable, and that her relationships weren't as nuanced as they could have been, I found the plot and worldbuilding compelling. I'm not sure if I'll continue with the trilogy given the graphic violence, but I overall enjoyed the experience of reading this! I read this after Babel, and am enjoying seeing Kuang explore some similar themes in new contexts.

Ever so slightly predictable but it doesn’t take much away from the story which was so lovely. Incredibly dark and heavy themes and trauma but these made a lot of sense for the story and characters (and I’ve almost definitely forgotten to add some content warnings)

I crushed this book in just over a week. So hard to put it down, even when you're being traumatised and having your heart torn out. What I'd give to have recorded my face journey during... that chapter... A whole lot of trigger warnings, some are just mentions but R F Kuang just went down the list and said "all of it." And I wouldn't have had it any other way.

PLEASE check the trigger/content warnings for this book before reading. CW for war, violence, death, genocide, classism, rape, child death, and animal death.

I'm still unsure what I want to rate this as it made me so uncomfortable and was so dark but I guess that was the point. War isn't supposed to be comfortable, the things people and nations do in war can be horrific and there is often no black and white good guy versus bad guy. I wanted to root for Rin and her friends but by the end I wondered if I really should.

Some scenes or descriptions were so intense that sometimes I wondered if they needed to be, but these things do happen in real life so why should we tone them down in fiction for the comfort of the reader? RF Kuang posed so many deep and thoughtful questions about the nature of conflict, war and genocide in this book and I thought that was good but I don't know if I can really say I enjoyed this book because there wasn't much fun about the content, but I found it interesting and well-written (though I could tell how much her writing has improved between this and her recent work).

This book is HEAVY. I read it the first time a few years ago and was unprepared. The depiction of war and violence is visceral. I put the book down and was unable to finish the first time. Coming back to it now, I do think the books is well written with some very poignant themes and messages. Head the trigger warnings!!! Much of the violence, genocide, & rape happens ~technically~ off page; but the aftermath is gruesome and vivid.

That aside, I love the nuance the author provides. None of the characters or sides in the war are the 'good guys'. The main character is frustrating and makes many decisions the reader can't agree with. But her mental state and motivations are shown so well that we see why she did these things and all the forces that pushed her into them.
