There were some really engaging moments in this book that made it hard to put down, where I really felt like I was propelled back into the author’s memories and experiencing her relationships. However, overall I struggled with the cadence of the writing (maybe? Not sure how to describe it) and felt like each chapter was both its own essay, but yet wasn’t. I also agree with others’ thoughts that I had expected the story to deal more with the author’s reckoning with her father’s crime, once she learned what it was, and I don’t feel like we really leaned into that.

This memoir epitomized how someone can use their experiences—good or bad—to grow, learn, and encourage others.
Ashley writes so beautifully and has a gift for describing things so accurately and vividly that some times I was blown away.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by her and it just added to the reading experience. I totally recommend this book!

A book that challenges us to see the best in everyone - including the family members who have done us the most harm.

This is one of the most insightful, poignant, and honest memoirs I've ever read. It's awe-inspiring how thoughtfully and lovingly the author remembers and writes about her life, even when recounting some very heavy moments and relationships in her life. I loved this and didn't want to put it down and I definitely shed a few tears at the end. I wish I had her courage. I loved this, and I loved the interview with Clint Smith at the end of the audiobook as well, definitely worth the listen. 5 stars!

Some of her writing really spoke to me especially about her relationship with her mother. Very powerful memoir!
