Maybe it's not having grown up with this book or the cultural understanding of it, or being in this day and age, but I really didn't care much for the protagonists and empathize more with Milady de Winter.
(lots of thoughts shared with https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/42899950)
When reading this at first, I thought it was so classically boyish and annoying, but then as the book progressed I really appreciated how Milady and other characters critique these behaviors in a way that sometimes felt surprisingly modern. I like that the characters are all gray and all their faults and merits are laid out for the reader to make their own opinions on. In the end though, the guys all get away or get better with doing some really bad shit, and what bothers me the most about this is that I can see how this kind of literature in the past has perpetuated misogyny and toxic masculinity for a long long time.
It's a very well written novel and I'm not surprised it's a classic, but when young boys read this, I doubt they pick up on the nuances, and hence the cultural impact and general understanding of this book is what it is now.

A quintessential swashbuckler tale - well-paced, and overall very enjoyable. Despite having read the William Barrow translation, which (if general consensus is to be believed) does her a misservice, Milady (or "her ladyship", as Barrow calls her) steals the show with her schemes, charisma, and guile - she's ever-present in the background of d'Artagnan's adventures like a sort of spectre, and chapters 50 onwards (in which she features heavily) are truly gripping reading.
Perhaps I'll return later to read the (allegedly more true to the original) Pevear translation - or maybe I should just learn French and read it as Dumas intended!

I’m not sure what I was expecting, but this wasn’t it. Dumas certainly has a way of taking stories down roads I never expected.
Oh, Alexandre, you make such a wonderful plot and full characters but it's so damn long. The characters were so long-winded, I could hardly stand it at times. I had to put the book down several times to give my brain a break from the exhausting and repetitive dialogue.
The colloquial language amused me, mostly because I'm secretly a stupid teenager at heart. Instead of 'saying' things characters will sometimes 'ejaculate.' Call it childish if you will, but you try not to laugh when D'Artagnan "mentally" ejaculates.
I enjoyed the story but found myself really upset with the ending. I grew up on the movies and I didn't realize that the ending was so tragic.
A thing that grated me was that every time I felt like something was going to be resolved, someone popped in and messed it up. I was absolutely dying for a resolution at the end of the book.
Did I enjoy it? Yes. Will I read it again? Maybe. Will I read more from Dumas? After finishing The Count of Monte Cristo, I think I'm going to take a very long break from Dumas, but I still would like to read some of his other work.
My feeling with authors like Dumas is that if I got through Phantom of the Opera, I can get through anything.
