Joyful friends, mostly loyal, they hadn't abandoned their protector before the gathering storm; and despite the threatening sky, despite the shuddering earth, they remained, smiling, considerate, and as devoted to misfortune as they had been to prosperity.

This quote (from the man in the iron mask not t3m) is the ideal that I held the musketeers to before I read this book and found out that they actually all suck and milady is the slayest character.

I'll stick to that campy movie with all the hotties playing the musketeers and theres airships for some reason as my canon musketeer tale.

Wow.

It took me just under 3 months to finish this book. Which kinda stinks cause I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I had sat down and plowed through it in a week.
But in hopes that this review won’t take me 3 months to write, Imma just jump into my thoughts and whatnot.

The characters were so fun to read about, and there were so many moments that I actually laughed out loud, which is kinda rare for me. The main four characters were so iconic (yes indeed they were morally questionable but ykw it kinda just added to the chaotic dynamic of the group) and it was a good time. Lorde de Winter was

Clever and witty, exciting and engaging, it's a thoroughly enjoyable story.

From a modern perspective, the main characters strike me as maniacs (well, not only them), ready to kill & die over the slightest insult or for seemingly minor or even random causes. In addition to major, ostensibly more justifiable causes, of course. The villains are complex and highly intelligent, leading to some very tense situations. Dumas is excellent at building tension, sometimes over the course of numerous chapters with increasing intensity.

So much of the culture and custom in the book is totally foreign to the "modern" version of civilization many current readers are likely familiar with. Knowing nothing about that era of France except via Dumas' books, I find it's best to simply accept everything as mere storytelling context (much like fantasy or sci-fi).

Something I found particularly interesting, almost as a side note, is how he weaves in historical figures and skillfully incorporates their actual, known history. When looking up some of these characters out of curiosity after finishing the book, I was surprised at how much actually coincided with their characters in the story. It almost reminds me of those AI art algorithms that take a historical painting and then expand the scene all around it in a way that makes sense and blends perfectly into the original.

Dumas clearly had a profound understanding of the intricate nature of the human spectrum of attitudes and ambition, from diabolical scheming to righteous nobility so to speak. Some of his setups and descriptions show a nuanced insight into certain types of thought processes that is really quite surprising in how pointed and thorough it is. Likely this is one of the reasons that his stories are timeless and will always be worth reading.

So this is the second book I’ve completed in my Dumas readathon. If I had to choose between the book and the BBC series, I would have to choose the series. I feel that the series made a better use of all the characters except for maybe The Countess de Winter. She was definitely more of a force in this book than in the tv series. Overall an enjoyable read and I’ll be moving on to the next book in the D’Artagnan romances.
