Jason really enjoyed this story, despite the length of the book (long), and the slow start.
I thought I knew all the ins and outs of this book from pop culture, but it’s characterisations are really quite full. Funny and sad.

Wow. This book took me almost a month (and I only read two other books in between). I thought it was a bit meh. It wasn't as much high literature as I expected: it was a fun adventure book, but not really any big themes. I guess there'll be people who say fidelity and honour and stuff are themes, but I just feel like those things are excuses to get in some big fight. Really, the four main characters just felt like some frat boys. From dawn to dusk they're drinking and gambling and going after women. And the representation of women is just awful. No agency at all, except with Milady who then turn out to be the personification of evil. So apparently, women can either be sexualised villains or innocent bystanders. And don't give me the "it was another time"-crap. Dumas lived in the same time as De Maupassant and he knows how to write a subtle story. Plus, Dumas with his background should understand discrimination, but instead he makes this horrible comments about women and servants and basically everyone who does not have noble blood.
I do have to give credit to Dumas for his style of writing: this book might have taken me a month but that's only because its really big. The story has a quick pace and I never felt like I got stuck.

You would never know that this book was written apx 150 years ago! It seems like it could have been written this decade. Dumas is genious and the book is laugh out loud funny. Absolutely one of my favorites. An easy way to explore the classics.
