These musketeers were frat bros, y'all. Up until the very end, when things turned suddenly serious, they were sleeping and drinking their way through France and I LOVED how funny it was

The Three Musketeers is a classic for a reason. It's a quintessential adventure story of romance and intrigue, camaraderie and swordplay. That being said, it is one of few longer classics I would mostly recommend an abridged version to those interested. If you're invested in the historical side of the fiction, or just interested in knowing at every point the protagonists must come up with funds or horses for one reason or another, the full thing is for you! However, I think most readers will find an abridged telling just as, if not more, compelling as the whole tale. Another thing of note is partially to be expected with the time period, but be warned that the misogyny in this piece of literature is severe and largely unresolved in any just way towards the female characters it victimizes. Personally, I find taking a modern eye to the women of Dumas' story to be part of my fascination with it and still believe it to be an entirely worthwhile read.
Graphic: Misogyny, Violence
Moderate: Alcoholism, Infidelity, Murder, Classism
I picked this book up because of its history as a classic. It turns out this is actually a story of a group of bros. If The Hangover was a book it would be like this. I loved it. Who knew that swashbuckling was primarily motivated by lack of money and pretty ladies. Cheers to the imagery and humor.
I listened to John Lee read this as an audiobook.
In audible form, listened to in installments, it felt very much like the serial it was originally created as.
I totally enjoyed it!

Intriknya bagus, sayang kisah-kisah cintanya gak banget. Dan sayangnya lagi pertarungan musketri kurang digambarkan.
Sampai akhir, masih tidak paham alasan penting dan mendesak apa yang membuat musketri memusuhi kardinal.

For a long book this is such a fun read, I can't even put down the book!! The writing style is fun and witty. Also I never knew till I read it that there's 4 musketeers instead of 3
And I have no problem with a morally grey character, honestly I found them to be funny and give a little bit flavour
The only thing that I don't understand is this whole duelling thing, it's quite funny how d'artagnan keep on asking for a duel to almost every single character that he met

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. Great adventure, the Musketeers were not only suave & cool, but flawed and funny. They had the tastes for the finer things in life, but not the means to support it, so they often leeched off others and sneered at others who settled for less. Great twist at the end that wasn't a cop out, which was refreshing. I'm glad I took the time to read the original!
For the first two thirds of this book, I was amazed at how developed it was as a story and a novel and how well-concieved and presented the characters were. It wasn't a great book, in any modern sense, but a surprisingly good book for when it was written. My opinion shifted in the final quarter, which was mostly the story of the novel's antagonist. There are at least a hundred pages where the three musketeers do not appear and are barely mentioned. Because of this, I wondered if the novel was originally serialized and reader attention shifted to the very interesting antagonist, and that seems to be the case.
