“In the end, how well we love each other and how well we take care of each other will be what determines the survival of our planet and our species.” —James Doty

Wow, this was a powerful book, and one of the non-fiction highlights of 2020 for me. I’ll be going back through my notes and writing in more detail.

There are a lot of lessons in here that I want to take from the text to real life. At this point in time, it's more important than ever to not just speak of compassion-or read/write about it-but to actually put it into practice in the world. Because the survival of our species really does depend on it.

Not what I expected. Hoped it would be about neuroscience. It's not. Dr. Doty tells his life story, and how by imagining things metaphysical powers make them real, but this power is like the monkey's paw. If you imagine yourself locking up criminals, it may be your father you end up locking up. Mostly a bunch of new-age garbage, with some scientific terminology to give it the veneer of legitimacy, and Dr. Doty talking about how great he is, and how hard his struggles were to overcome. I'm sure he is a great guy, but I got really sick of the narcissism and magical thinking.

A way for the author to assuage the mistakes he's made in a way that shows him off and indulges his arrogance and "superiority"
