Made it 4 chapters in and just not feeling it

2.5

I was prepared for full on magical-realism/sci-fi online dating. That’s not what I got.

I think my biggest disappointment was the app itself. Instead of being an actual dating app with potential options to choose from (or in this case, options chosen for you), it was a glorified daily affirmations app, it’s only function was push notifications.

I also saw the twist with Cory being a Met match from a mile away, but that’s fine. Not a problem. My problem is that it was the main conflict of the last quarter. He was angry that she was influenced by the app, she was angry that he had kept their possible meeting a secret. I was ready to give the book 3 stars, but the ending was dumb and unnecessary.

Altogether pretty lackluster read.

This was a fun, light read at a time when I really needed it. I liked the friend group and their dynamics and also how the author made space for people who don’t fall neatly into the heterosexual category. Also, the fact that her brother was deaf definitely added colors and layers to the story for me.

In reading some of the other reviews I see that some folks thought these parts of the story were too PC or woke or doing too much, but I challenge readers and consumers of art to open themselves up to the realities of other perspectives. We never think there are too many straight characters in a story because that is the “norm.” I do bristle when I feel like writers are checking boxes in their work to stay in tune with the times, but I didn’t feel that way reading this. The choices felt organic to me.

I did have an issue with the believability of the app just appearing out of nowhere, but because I liked the characters it didn’t matter too much.

The story was a little predictable in places, but I truly enjoyed the journey of the Cory’s and their friends.

Good book

Really enjoyed this book. An easy read and it got me out of my reading slump. Would definitely recommend it.
