Three women seemingly not connected, but really are, each suffers after a fire destroys and an investigation begins.
The ending was a little anticlimactic, but it was suspenseful and kept me interested.

I received an ARC from a Goodreads giveaway for this novel that is set to publish in June 2020. Laura is high powered marketing executive that comes back from maternity leave and finds out the person who had been replacing her is now permanent. Mia is the temp who replaced her and is trying to make it work at her new workplace. Jennie is a wife to the boss where both Laura and Mia work and is hiding a secret. There is a fire at the firm but who started it? I liked that the story went backwards from the time of the fire but at points it was difficult to follow because of that. The pacing was inconsistent at times and I wanted more twists to the story. The end twist I did now see coming but otherwise I didn’t find it suspenseful. Rating is 3 stars
I have never read or listened to a Heidi Perks novel before and this one was pleasantly surprising. Listening to it was fantastic as it had three voices creating more of a play feel.
The story was told in a reversed timeline (not sure if that’s the correct description) but we basically start on the night of the fire and then skip back to 6 weeks before, to watch the drama unfold that led to that night. In between there are police interviews that provide snippets of information that left me intrigued and wanting to keep listening.
Out of the three women I related most to Laura. Being a mum of two I know the guilt that comes with returning to work. Luckily for me my hours are quite flexible so I was able to cater to what me and my family needed but had I been in a career such as Laura’s I don’t know how I would of done it. I also liked the Heidi Perk’s included the stay at home dad scenario and POV. I found Mia that hardest to warm to, from the start she seemed to sweet and innocent. Her perky attitude was grating and I kept telling myself that she was a slippery character to watch out for. Her story was one that definitely changed my opinion of her and her final actions made me admire her in some ways. Janie was the most interesting. From the outside she had the perfect life but she was deeply unhappy. I wanted to shake her at times and get her to talk to someone. Had she done that then a lot of the mess could of been avoided!
The unravelling of the story, the side stories and the police interviews all made for a compelling and thrilling read. I had guessed the who dunnit towards the end but not until the very last minute so the journey getting there was still enjoyable. I’ve now added some more of Heidi Perk’s books to my list to read!

My Review:⭐️⭐⭐️/ 5 stars
Thank you to Gallery Books and @netgalley for my advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
This a mystery/thriller I could not wait to read - the cover is so eye-catching. It revolves around the devastating fire and destruction of advertising firm, Morris & Wood. Three women (Laura, Janie, and Mia) were at the scene after the fire and all considered possibly a suspect that left someone dead. Laura had just returned to work after a 6 month maternity leave to find Mia (her temporary fill in) trying to sabotage her and steal her job. Janie is the wife of Harry Wood (owner/head of Morris & Wood) who also had her own reasons. I really enjoyed the police interviews of the 3 characters and the co-workers, building up the mystery of how it all led up to the fateful night. It was killing me to find out who Mia was and what her true motives were after going after Laura’s job. However, I was not crazy about the ending, a bit lackluster for me...The grand reveal was what I already figured out early on. I almost felt that Janie’s character was not interesting, and I did not care about her one bit. I wanted to like this more, but found myself thinking it was so/so.

Ok, whats with complex women and their secrets?! This is the 5th book that I’ve read in that category and this sure lives upto expectations!
Three woman, one secret which will take them down. Blindly go in and trust me, you’ll be sucked in from the beginning. I really liked the relationship and link between the characters and the suspense they hold. The story flow is engaging, suspenseful and kept me guessing how the suspense would break. The story flow alters between past and present, but its really contributing to the plot. This is my first Heidi Perks book and it won’t be the last!

All I can say is, I did not expect who did it. I loved how the book unraveled and kept me engaged until the fire and other talked events in the interviews happened
