I had a lot of fun reading this. I read it in one sitting and got taken on the ride. I don't usually find myself doing this, it's been awhile since I've just been able to sit and enjoy the ride.
Laura, Mia and Jamie are 3 woman that are bound together. They just don't know it yet. I liked the narrative structure of it alternating between the 3 leading up to the fire and the police interviews after. It made for an interesting story.
I thought it was a good slow-moving tale, that was very engaging.
4/5 stars.
The best thriller published in 2020 that I've read so far. If you like thrillers, pick this one up. It gave me Big Little Liars vibes, since it was about 3 woman and the police tapes.

A fire burns down an advertising agency and someone may have been in the building, but as the investigation progresses the police begin to suspect someone is lying but who. Lauren, Mia, and Janie all seem to be holding something back, but are they lying to protect themselves or someone else. jumping back weeks before the fire the story picks up as Lauren returns to the office after her maternity leave to find Mia, the temp hired to help out during her absence permanently ensconced in the office running her accounts. Janie, the wife of the owner also seems to have secrets in her past and reasons to dislike both Lauren and Mia as well. Good pacing reveals more and more secrets and clues to the reader as the plot moves forward without giving too much away. I would rate this book 3.5 stars if Goodreads allowed half stars. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through the Goodreads First Reads giveaways.

This was a birthday gift from my brother. Pretty mediocre tbh although i did like the feminist perspective on the nature of women in top work positions. I read 400 pages of this on a snow day with cat on my lap and a roaring fire :)
I listened to this audiobook and quite enjoyed it. My only complaint was that I felt certain sections carried on a bit too much. I didn't connect with any of the main characters very much until the very end. All and all, a good read.
This book is a fun and decently paced thriller that keeps the reader invested. The story is centered around the very separate and yet overlapping stories of each of three women. One is a new mom, Laura who has left her job temporarily for the birth of her son. The second, Mia, is the replacement meant to be temporary, to do the job while Laura is on maternity leave. And the third is Janie, the wife of the boss of the agency that Laura and Mia are working with. Each of them have secrets and drama in their lives personally.
The story is based around an investigation of a fire at the business that kills a man and is considered to be arson. Each person is potentially the arsonist and therefore murderer.
There are great twists and an interesting story with many factors complicating the interaction between the women.
Definitely recommend.

This is my second Heidi Perks book that I have read, and I think she may be a new favorite author. This story of three women and their secrets is captivating and suspenseful. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
The story begins as an advertising agency building is burning to the ground and a body is being removed from the scene. The story then flashes back in time to weeks before the fire when Laura, an ad executive, returns to work after maternity leave to find her temporary replacement, Mia, making herself a permanent fixture in Laura's workplace. Tensions brew, and the boss's wife, Janie, becomes involved in the drama that unfolds. Throughout the story, the reader is trying to figure out what these women are hiding and who started the fire that brings down the agency.
I found the characters interesting and complex. For a good bit of the story, I struggled to determine how each character connected to the others and why they seemed to have it in for each other. There was something in the past that was causing the tensions, and it was fun as a reader to try to decipher what that was. I was unable to guess the culprit until the reveal, which made me very happy. I do not like a thriller in which I can predict the outcome too early on.
The narrative devices used by the author help to create suspense and keep the reader engaged. While the point of view remains third person throughout, the narrator focuses on the thoughts and feelings of each female character at different times in the book. This allows the reader to see each of their perspectives. The story also shifts from the past to present every few chapters. In the present, a detective is interviewing witnesses and suspects about the fire. I thought this was a great suspense building technique.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I like how the story unfolds, and I am satisfied with how it ends. I would definitely recommend this to readers that like a good mystery aspect to their thrillers.
