the instant valka said "we should have kids! :)" i knew she was dead. and sure enough. her character had vanished anyway, somewhere along the line going from outspoken cutting woman with motivations and goals to generic sidepiece who follows the main character wherever he goes. I may be giving her initial characterization too much credit. anyway. still reading this shit
oh this is the last one that's out. bleh maybe i'll forget about it and not read the next one whenever it drops

While Ashes of Man isn't my favorite installment in Christopher Ruocchio's Sun Eater Series, it was still a very engaging read. I think this installment suffered, however slightly, from the fact that it and Kingdoms of Death were written to be one book, and were subsequently split into two volumes.
In Ashes of ManHadrian is dealing with the fallout Kingdoms of Death, and, in short, he is a mess; he is physically, emotionally, and spiritually spent, suffering from PTSD, and is completely done with the Empire and its politics. I appreciate the time the author took to explore the consequences of the traumatic events of the previous installment, and showed that while Hadrian may have healed from his physical aliments, the emotional/spiritual ones linger.
Mr. Ruocchio's writing, world-building, and character development continue to improve with each installment. In the fifth offering, he spend time further developing the supporting characters; specifically Valka, Bassander Lin, and Lorian Aristedes.
While he action sequences and battle scenes were well done, probably some of the best in the entire series, and .Hadrian's conversations with the Emperor were extremely well written and full of tension, the overall feel of the plot felt a bit repetitive - I think a side effect of the original novel being split into two.
As this is the fifth installment, I can't say to much without getting into spoiler territory - other than saying I an extremely interested in where the story might go and I am very, very afraid of where Hadrian is heading (and that's even with us knowing since paragraph one of book one that he is going to destroy an entire race of living beings).
