I LOVED this story. The mystery kept me reading, and though the beginning was a bit boring, it quickly got entertaining. This is definitely one of my favorite mysteries, Koontz is pretty freakin' brilliant. :)

I enjoyed this one, although I thought the beginning when they were exploring and trying to figure out what was going on was stronger.

This was my first ever Dean Koontz book. His writing style in Phantoms was a masterful blend of atmospheric suspense and vivid detail, weaving a chilling narrative that balances supernatural horror with scientific intrigue. He excels at building tension through sharp pacing, giving the quieter moments an undercurrent of dread. His characters are complex and relatable. Overall, his style is equal parts gripping and thought-provoking, leaving me thrilled and unsettled. Phantoms follows the two sisters, Jenny and Lisa Page, as they return to Snowfield, CA, they discover that the streets are empty and everyone who isnt missing has been found dead in strange and grotesque ways. The sisters team up with the local law enforcement and a group of scientists to confront this otherworldly force. This book explores themes of fear, survival, and humanity's struggle against the unknown, culminating in a tense battle for survival and the fate of the town.

This book was an interesting take on how humans create evil, but the authors blatant misogyny and sexism really killed the plot. There is so much unnecessary violence against and name calling of women throughout this entire book.

Super slow paced. Very repetitive, same scene described from every characters perspective…..multiple times.
dark medium-paced

It's...got an interesting setup which I like, but the writing is mediocre. Dean Koontz to me is a "grandma novelist" and this is definitely that, though with a slightly better premise and a solid and atmospheric opening.

Characters are dull, flat, and archetypical. Dialogue is stiff. The book's themes and ideas are sort of infantile, and never operate at a level beyond the reader's initial impressions.

I read this because it partially inspired the narrative and world of the game Silent Hill, but Silent Hill is a much more thoughtful and complex narrative work than this.
