Loved the artwork in the first half, 5 stars for that but wasn't crazy about the artist change halfway through. It was okay, but not as interesting after the colorful delight we got in the beginning.
The story/writing itself is more like a 3-3.5.

I am by no means an Archie fanatic, but like any kid I picked up the books at the grocery store from time to time. This is a fresh, fun reboot that is faithful to the spirit of the original characters but gives them even more depth and drama. I mean, it's Archie -- things never get too dark, but the story is still compelling and it's so fun to see these characters fleshed out and in a contemporary setting. Already looking forward to volume 2!

When Archie: The New Riverdale crossed my desk at work, I knew it was coming home with me IMMEDIATELY. I have such fond memories of Archie, Jughead, Veronica & Betty. As a youth, Archie comics used to be the only one I bought with my hard earned allowance. I’d race down to 7/11 and buy the newest issue and a pack of Fun Dip. It made my afternoon!

Now, the “new” Archie has made my afternoon all over again. It was like settling in with old friends while also enjoying a bit of an update to the characters. No, don’t despair! They aren’t changed! Their personalities are still intact. They just have a fresh coat of paint, a bit of sprucing up.

Only thing missing today while I raced through these pages was the pack of Fun Dip … do they still make that??

I absolutely loved this! Comics and graphic novels are often too busy for me to read easily, but this is beautifully designed. The illustrators are incredibly talented! The art was beautiful, the writing was fun, and the dialogue was modern and charming without feeling too "hello, fellow kids." The bonus material at the back was an added treat that softened the blow of the volume being over.

I picked this up as part of my effort to sample more comic books, manga, and graphic novels as part of my work as a high school library worker. Archie is definitely moving to the top of my list for recommendations for lovers of the genre and reluctant readers alike.

I'd never read Archie before, but I knew who he was because I don't live under a rock. I know the famous red hair, and what I call the original love triangle with Betty and Veronica. I'd never had much desire to read it.

I mostly enjoyed this but I'm also nostalgic for the old school Archie comics from when I was reading them as a kid. I definitely appreciate and respect the angle Mark Waid and Fiona Staples took- not trying to reinvent the Archie universe but more wanting to add their spin- and I thought that this was probably the best revamp of a series I've ever seen. Fiona Staples is one of my favorite comic artists right now so I obviously enjoyed the art a lot. I don't know if I loved this a lot but I certainly enjoyed it.

Potential alternate titles the author must have considered, then rejected:

Archie Reloaded: Enter the Kardashian References
Archie Reloaded: Asians Exist in Riverdale
Archie Reloaded: Attack of Jughead's Cheekbones

That being said this is still really enjoyable and I can't wait to read more in the series; hopefully similar exotics like homosexuals, Latinos, and Jew'es will appear in Archie Andrew's world. (Fingers crossed Hiram Lodge can check off two of those boxes in one sub-plot.)

I read the first few issues of this, but they were such quick reads I thought I'd like it better in trade form. I'm glad I waited. It's a fun relaunch of the classic series. The first few issues benefit greatly by Fiona Staples work, but the artwork in the latter half isn't bad. It gets the job done. The story is fun. If you're interested in the characters because of Riverdale, you won't find any of the brooding of that series here. I like Riverdale a lot, but I wish Jughead in that series would take after this comic Jughead more. He's a fun character as presented here. I do feel like there could be a little more meat here character or plot-wise to really make one want to read the next volume, but right now it's certainly a fun read.
