man cant accept that something can be not understood

It’s a beautiful work of unintentionally Gothic sci-fi. I walked away from it barely understanding what I read. This too is Solaris.

I mean it’s a super straight forward sci-fi book. If that’s your jam then this is a great pick!

Solaris is very technical which emphasizes the sci-fi elements of the book, however, there is very little emotional development of the characters. Considering that the main source of conflict in the story was a doppelgänger of the main character’s ex, I was pretty let down by the lack of emotional involvement. We’re given the back story of their relationship in a pretty clinical manner and when he “falls in love” with her, it kinda feels like it came out of nowhere. The most emotional conversation we get comes towards the middle of the book, after Rheya drinks the liquid oxygen and then the two encounter a very drunk Snow, but by that point it felt a little out of place considering the author’s writing style up to that point.

I did love the ocean being a living being and the imagery of humans exploring it. Overall, there’s some really cool world building going on, but the themes surrounding intimacy seemed like an afterthought.

The story is about the crew of a space station who are investigating a mysterious planet called Solaris. The planet has the ability to shape itself into the thoughts of those who observe it, creating physical manifestations of their memories and desires. The crew of the space station is confronted with personal demons and struggles as they struggle to comprehend the mystery of Solaris. The novel explores themes of identity, human relationships, and the nature of reality.

Popsugar reading challenge: A book set in space

Really lovely melancholy book. I see why it’s such a classic. Kinda felt like the love child between Neon Genesis Evangelion and Star Trek. Ruminations on the unknowability of other people but set in a relatively optimistic (???) view of the future.

Or I could have completely the wrong take on it. Wrapping my brain around this book feels like trying to remember a nightmare that just seems silly by light of day and you aren’t sure what your dream self was even so worried about in the first place. Or something.

Also the most recent audiobook’s narrator is Alessandro Juliani aka dub L from Death Note. He’s a good voice actor in general, but also that added an extra bit of meta fun to this.
