Interesting concept and I’m sure I’ll be told that I’m wrong but I just didn’t really enjoy it.

Lem’s exploration of first contact - in this story being far out of human control - and the effect it has on the players of the book is not a ‘take’ I’d come across before. For some, the book’s strength will be in Kelvin’s long psychological and philosophical monologues - but o be brutally honest they just bored me.

It’s always difficult with translated texts too - any poeticism of the original work may well have been lost.

Story was okay, ideas were pretty cool, got super bogged down by the writing style.

This book really felt like it was two books fighting over control. On one hand, it's an interesting look at love--what faults are you willing to accept in someone you love? On the other hand, it's a fascinating first contact story that forces you to rethink the popular conventions of humanoid aliens.

Neither side of the story really had the chance to shine but they were both extremely interesting and novel. I was left unsatisfied at the end--which is possibly the point.

I wouldn't suggest to anyone that isn't a hardcore scifi fan who wanted to read "the classics" of the genre--or maybe a philosophy geek.

It had some every interesting concepts and although only  204 pages, it had sections that added little to the story. This would have been a great short story or perhaps a novella but as a novel the squeeze is not worth the juice
