The Good:
  • Ups the ante of the first book.
  • Expands characters' backstories and development
  • Multi-part heist with satisfying reveals

The Bad:
  • Character death that felt out of left field.

You Might Like this if You Like:
  • Shows like Leverage or Sherlock
  • Found family tropes
  • Morally gray characters
  • Elaborate heists

I can't believe how great this story is. I was so impressed by Six of Crows, but Crooked Kingdom cranked it up to 11. I'm blown away at how elaborate the plot was, and how clever every thing felt.

We get a lot more backstory here, as well as the conclusion of some of the things set up in Six of Crows.

It's so easy to fall into this duology. With characters that are so vibrant and lovable and a plot that moves at breakneck speed, it's hard to put these books down.

The only thing that felt disappointing was Matthias' death. It felt unceremonious and out of left field. Perhaps this was intentional, but it still felt dissatisfying.

i am speechless, i am emotional. wtf amazing incredible i am shocked, the ending was so satisfying to see pekka be scared so much that he has to constantly move homes with his fear of the crows getting him, with inej about to stab him with the help of kaz unlocking the lock to his bedroom window a power duo!! kaz holding inej’s hand WITHOUT GLOVES…YES I AM CRYING FUCK. also jan van eck can suck it in prison that’s what u deserve for planning to kill the cutest boy wylan, thankfully jesper is there to defend him and read to wylan which is so cute. also jesper’s dad mr colm fahey i love you. now the pain…matthias…u are alive idc u are alive and u did not die to a fjerdan child saying that u are wrong because u realised it’s okay to love a grisha and to not fear them, the character development i’m looking at u leigh that was incredible and how much u wanted to destroy me, chapter 40-43 u gave me so much pain i couldn’t read the words even with my glasses on as my eyes were just filled with tears. the way the last words matthias was to nina and to find peace with the fjerdans and grisha and how they can change to be like him let me sit here and scream, “i have been made to protect you. even in death, i will find a way.” ALSO matthias’s last line saying he is already home in ketterdam with grisha’s surrounding him IS SO POWERFUL BYE. and u telling me the first and last chapter of matthias was about dreaming of nina. u can’t do that to me. nina deserved to be happy instead she was served with a dead matthias which is sad that her power is bringing the dead back to help her fight but can’t save matthias…yes pain. leigh really said let’s give alex pain and kill a crow within the last chapters cause why not but to hurt me and nina. 5 stars, i love i don’t know compared to soc as they are both top tier books especially fantasy top tier that this duology shouldn’t even complete with other fantasy books out there, leigh u win with the crows and their money, also money… kaz buying inej a ship that says wraith on it and then have a showcase on the ship with inej seeing her parents after so many years and FUCK I LOVE KAZ. jesper living with wylan and colm being the wholesome dad he is letting jes live with wylan and can visit the farm and accept being a grisha which hello is awesome with that bullet scene to kuwei (who surprise was happy enough to kiss jes and wylan being a jelly mess) anyways clapping for leigh and her amazing work on this duology that s&b can’t compare thank you, no waiting for s2 of the show :)))

This series is an all time favorite and I could write a 10+ page essay about these characters.

Please note: while this does not contain spoilers for Crooked Kingdom, it may contain spoilers for the previous book in the duology, Six of Crows.

The story picks up shortly after the last book left off. It’s been a few days, but Kaz and his crew are hiding away and scheming. They were tricked by Van Eck, and Inej has been taken captive. Though it’ll be hard, they don’t intend to let things slide.

Van Eck is a formidable opponent though, and he has a lot of ways to throw his weight around Ketterdam. Still, Kaz is sly and cunning, and he’s always got a trick of his own up his sleeve.

This book was filled with so many twists and turns. Nothing is as it seems, when it looks like things will go one way, something else is thrown into the mix to change everything up.

Kaz is honestly incredible to read about. The way his mind works is crazy. He’s always two steps ahead, always another angle he can take. He’s powerful, and he knows it. Reading his parts are enjoyable because you see that he isn’t always as cold as his exterior shows, but he also knows what needs to be done to keep up his appearances.

The other characters are great to read about as well. Poor Nina is struggling with her withdrawals, and the struggle is making her weak. She pushes on though, doing all she can to help everyone around her. Matthias is better in this book too, he’s less against Grisha. He knows they aren’t the monsters he grew up believing them to be. He doesn’t completely trust all of them, but he’s growing.

Jesper has to face some of his demons in this book. He’s been running from a lot, and he can’t keep running anymore. Wylan also has some of his own struggles too. He and Jesper both find ways to lift up the other and it was always great seeing their interactions

Inej is still such a cool character. She puts on such a brave face, even when she’s terrified. She still has her ambitions for the future, but she cares for their group. She pushes her limits and does everything for them that’s within her power.

I honestly am so sad that I’m done with this book. I want more of the crows!! The intricacies of their story is so fun to read about. Leigh Bardugo has improved so much as a writer over her books, and it’s awesome getting to see her growth. I hope she writes that third Crows book she mentioned in the past, because I know it would be a welcome addition to the Grishaverse!!

Okay, here was meat of the found family aspects I was looking for in Six of Crows. I really enjoyed this book. I don't think I have anything to say about it that hasn't already been said, but I just really enjoyed it.
