I have heard readers like this book less than its predecessor, Six of Crows, but I actually think I enjoyed it more! The found-family dynamic is out in full force in this sequel with rewarding character development and a plot full of twists and turns. The addition of some parental figures in the mix
(Nina’s mentors and Jesper’s father)
really highlights that these characters are just kids who are victims of circumstance fighting for their lives, not criminals. The dark overtones, well-written characters, and beautiful imagery made me forget this is intended as YA, but the wacky-bordering-on-unbelievable plot twists were a reminder. Regardless, this was such a fun read and these characters will all keep a place in my heart.

Reread review: This book is a fantastic end to the Six of Crows duology. While the first book balanced plot development and character development, this book is more heavily skewed in the favor of character backstory and deepening the relationships between the Crows, and that honestly works out for the best. Kazans, Inez, Jesper, Nina, Matthias, and Wylan are all at their best in this novel and they truly feel like a team.

Ketterdam is the biggest character in this book however, with most of the action taking place in the city itself, this novel feels almost like an exploration into the city of Ketterdam and I wasn't complaining bc this city is by far the most captivating one in the Grishaverse.

My only criticism is that the pace of this book is a bit slow at times and the heists weren't *as* interesting as the ones from the first book, which dropped it by a 1/2 star for me. Overall though, because of my love for the characters & the ending, I rounded it up on GR to 5 stars.

A perfect conclusion to this incredible duology. Following up Six of Crows is no easy feat and this book manages to hold its own portraying these lovable (and deeply flawed) characters as they face even higher stakes.

It’s rare to find a story that can manage this complex of a plot so gracefully, while also letting each of the wide cast of characters grow into beautifully dangerous people. I’m deeply saddened to let these characters go, but Mostly I feel lucky to know their story at all. I truly loved this book.
