Truly compelling and masterfully crafted, Leigh Bardugo is truly a Grisha, a Corporalki able to both rend and heal your heart with her cruel and beautiful tales. My friend Alice was so right to keep insisting that I read this series. As much as I hate Kaz, he is wonderfully written, Inej is epic, Jesper is hilarious and precise, Nina is witty and pragmatic, Matthias is gorgeous and admirable in his change of heart which made his fate all the more lamentable, and Wylan is adorable and his struggles of character and family are fascinating. I find this book was even better than the first with all of its swerving twists and triumphant victories coming from the most downtrodden individuals in all of Kerch. Inej’s reunion at the end Gad me close to tears and the development of Nina’s unique power was eerie and fascinating. Leigh Bardugo is a master of her own Small Science—the manipulation of words for her own incredible manifestations! When you can’t beat the odds, change the game.

While I didn't find it as good as Six of Crows, I was still thoroughly entertained, and appreciated the character development of the beloved found family. My heart breaks for each and every one of these children (YES - CHILDREN...sometimes it's hard to remember these are 16-18 y.o kids!!) and what they've had to endure through to the end of this story.

The plot dragged a bit in times, which is hard to believe considering the amount of games within games within games that Kaz is able to wend - almost a bit too convoluted and messy sometimes to keep straight. I know this is a fantasy world, but yes, even fantasy has to toe the line of believability.

Kudos to the
Jesper/Wylan arc - I'm so happy this book went this direction WITHOUT FUSS! I was so hoping for something because of the sparks in SoC...they were just so cute together, but that fact that there was no fanfare was amazing. It just WAS, and it was fabulous.

And Kaz & Inej's arc:

Two of the deadliest people the Barrel had to offer and they could barely touch each other without both of them keeling over. But they’d tried. He’d tried. Maybe they could try again.”

Their last chapter with just the hand holding?!? *chef's kiss*

Anyways - a fitting end, to an overall wonderful duology.

I definitely enjoyed this book the most of the Grishaverse. But also reading 5 of these books back-to-back has left me in no desire to read the other two. I've been stuck in this world for what seems like forever and I really wanna read something else now lol
