The main duo in this is iconic, and for good reason. Sherlock has an intriguing personality and wit, and Dr. Watson just can't stop praising him.
The prose felt a bit off in parts. It often had long monologues of people recounting long events, and it feels unrealistic, because it's like they remember every word and every detail of the events ... while I have to ask someone's name three times before I remember it.
As for the story, it gets even murkier for me.
Part I was fun, but I feel like it mostly did a good job at showing who Sherlock is and his abilities, and not much more.
Part II on the other hand was very jarring at first. It felt like I was thrown from London Sherlock Holmes to some Dune story (desert + religion). So I had trouble understanding what was going on. It was, nonetheless, very satisfying to feel the click, to understand what had happened.
Despite not fully buying it, I do want to continue this series, partly because I have heard this first book is often criticized as one of the weaker in the saga. And also, if I were to treat this as a pure character-setup, it did a great job - so in that sense, I’m very excited to continue.

I know it's not right, but the BBC Sherlock series has been one of my most favourite series ever, and after watching it 8 times, I was heavily influenced by it.
So now while this was an amazing start for the books, I still need to get used to this new (old, original) version of Sherlock Holmes, and I guess that takes some time.
