This installment in the Kate Daniels series hits the ground running and does not stop.  These books are typically pretty fast paced but this one takes the cake.  Kate and her intrepid friends once again knowingly step into a trap when a conclave (a meeting between the Pack and the vampire controlling Order) is called while Curran is away.  It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that the Pack is vulnerable when divided.  When Kate learns that the Order has engineered the murder of one of the Order by one of the Pack, she knows war is on the horizon and is determined to stop it.

Along with the first book in the series, this was my favourite.  It brings a pretty big story arc to resolution with a confrontation between Kate and the head of the Order, Roland.  It also allows Kate to truly demonstrate how powerful she is and there's a lot of Order butt-kicking that occurs which just makes me happy.  Finally, I also liked Curran a lot better in this book which upped the enjoyment for me.

First 1/3 of the book had too much drawn out angst.
Spoilerespecially about the death of a character that I don't recall being in one of these books for a long time, so it felt really forced
. The last 2/3 picked up nicely though.

Bonus

There is a bonus short story which is an interesting mystery to go along with the very compelling novel about aftermath and transitions, with lots of action and suspense.

In which we realize that Hugh is a Really Bad Guy. Hot, though.

In which we also develop a crush on Desandra, who might even rival Kate for badassery.

This book... what a ride. There's truly horrifying new monster, gory battles, betrayal, Kate and Curran being cute, lots of Ghastek, and this Kate quote, which is truly the energy I want going into 2025.

"You had a chance to make a difference today and you stepped back. Your authority is only good if you do something with it, and you chose to do nothing. Do that enough times and pretty soon nobody will acknowledge it at all. The next time you need my help, don't call."

I disconnected the call.

"Diplomatic," Barabas said.

"F*ck diplomatic."

I also really appreciate how brilliant the Ilona Andrews team is at establishing Kate as an incredibly strong, capable leader in her own right while still allowing her to be in a heterosexual couple where the man is also strong. She can and does solve her own problems without the help of Curran, AND she also still wants/needs him on a personal level. Because leadership can be isolating and hard, and IA recognizes that it's easier with a partner. It's really nuanced and wonderful writing and characterization. Bravo.

Absolutely Fabulous! What happens next? SOOO many questions!

I just love Kate Daniels so much. I wish I had the next book in my hands right now!
