Tldr; I can’t believe I haven’t read Katee Robert before now! This was such a good dark romance.

I thought this was okay. I enjoyed reading it for the most part. I had some issues with some of the black and white morality around
murdering a wife killing abuser
, but overall I liked it well enough. The plot is thin at times, but there’s enough there to keep the story moving. One of my least favorite things about this is that they aren’t actually gods? Just people with the “roles” - I saw someone say this is more mafia than mythology and I feel like that is an accurate assessment.

Also! If you are reading this book because StoryGraph has given it the “lgbtqia+“ tag, you will probably be disappointed. There is brief mention of past queer relationships, but nothing of any substance within the story.

This was enjoyable, but I'm not sure it was particularly good. To be fair, this is my first foray into erotica, and I think as a genre it just might not be for me - but then without the erotica elements the rest was quite thin and underdeveloped. There were a few eyeroll moments and it didn't really deliver on the dark angsty story I was expecting - they fell for each other very quickly and then never really disagreed, and I couldn't really be persuaded that Hades was anything but a good guy. However, there were many elements I enjoyed, including: casual queerness (two Bi MC), emphasis on consent, Hermes, and much of the banter. There were a few parts of their internal monologues that were repetitive, but otherwise the writing didn't get in the way of the story. I liked the premise and the way their relationship linked to larger stakes, but found their lack of planning frustrating - especially as it felt we were meant to think these characters were smart. Not a story to look too closely at!

I really liked this book however the setting and the world building were hard for me to grasp.  I know that’s not a huge part of this book but the confusion took me out of the story at times.  Otherwise it was a very enjoyable read 😄

This book was basically just a boring, tame mafia AU retelling where the author knew the bare bones of the original myths and nothing more. It wasn't as sexy as I thought it would be, which is embarrassingly disappointing.
The whole thing with Zeus' death felt way too rushed and empty, just like the rest of the book.
Neon Gods totally suffers from "telling, not showing" (and when it is shown, it's different from how it was told). I absolutely do not believe Persephone when she says Olympus is full of poison because it's never actually shown????? Also, the fact that "fuck" was one of the only curse words outside the sex scenes (like, one per page) is hilarious to me. Sure, it's a quick read, but it was so devoid of anything that it was a waste.

Um…. I don’t even know how to rate this lmao. Decisions were definitely made in this book! Some of them I liked, most of them I didn’t. I simultaneously hated and enjoyed this book? I guess I only came for the Katee Robert smut & it did deliver on that front, but everything else was…. Something.

I much prefer this version of Hades and Persephone over the version in A Touch of Darkness. Unique world building, compelling plot, interesting characters, and excellent spice. I only wish there'd been a little more exposition to really establish the villain as scary and threatening. Looking forward to reading the second one!
