A beautiful cover, some pretty turns of phrase, but I found the plot so strange and confusing. Not for me, alas.
Another dose of glorious storytelling from Trent Dalton. The harshness of Molly's life & her incredible spirit were both devastating & joyous. Loved all of the highs & lows of this & would recommend to anyone who enjoyed similar elements in Boy Swallows Universe. It's not always pretty - in fact very confronting in spots - but this juxtaposition of violence against the lush descriptions & otherworldly nature of their Outback journey was beautiful. Highly recommended.
I'm not going to lie, I bought this book because of the beautiful the cover. I think I've got an unpopular opinion in that I liked this book more than BSU. It was hard for me to keep picking this one up but once I was reading I just fell into the story. I really enjoyed Molly's character and I really liked how it ended.
Nope.
The purple prose did me in.
DNF at about 20%.

I like the main story but it got too long at some points and at certain points the chapter format didn’t work that well.

Woah, captivating and entrancing story. I especially loved the characters and how their relationships with each other developed. I was very invested. The themes were well done throughout the book and when characters had a philosophical moment it didn’t seem random at all but very natural and fitting. Some of the chapters were very poetic, like the crocodile and buffalo’s perspectives which were unique and kept me interested.
Gave this book a 100 pages but I couldn’t get into it - a bit too flowery on descriptions and I wasn’t connecting with the characters.
