"Promise me you will make your life Grand and beautiful and poetic... you must live a life so full that your Epitaph will write itself."

What do you get if you combine the Australia  outback + a Shakespeare loving, grave digger girl + treasure & curses + WWII + emotional and often gruesome details? You get this absolutely amazing novel!! This book is heavy and heartbreaking and sometimes graphic but it was absolutely amazing. Read it! 😅
I was already crying during the first chapter... where we meet our little Grave Digger girl.

"That's why people tell stories, she thinks. They remind us why we love things. They remind us why we love other people."

This story felt like it's for all of us who loved The Goonies when we were kids and we want something with similar vibes as an adult.

I listened to this one on audiobook and while the Australian accent took a little while for this American to get used to, by the end of the book I was absolutely in love with the narration!

Magical (ie, beautiful and also featuring a bit of magical realism). I love the two strong female leads, the nature descriptions and the adventure.

It just didn't quite hit me as much as BSU or Lola - I think maybe the start was a big long? I dunno.

Trent Dalton writes extraordinary acknowledgements.

The premise of this book is fantastic; a heartfelt exploration of trauma, loss and love set against the backdrop of World War II in Darwin.

This could have been an interesting read with some poignant moments, if it had been told in about 200 pages. Unfortunately, Dalton spends too much time waxing poetic for there to be any real plot developments. I think, though, this is just Dalton’s style, as I had the same issues in Boy Swallows Universe.

“And she thinks about the life she could have had if she'd known how to move through this complex earth the way water always knows how to move through it.”

The first quarter of the book dragged on and took awhile to catch my interest. This was an interesting story. However, I do believe that the story could have been shorter. Molly is a quirky character, so that was a bonus at least.

Give me a minute to gather my thoughts.

It was a beautifully written, heart wrenching story with very Australian tones which I love.
I’m glad it is now part of my collection.
