I love how she weaves poems directly in with the prose. This is hot, fresh stuff.

First novel of Ama Ata Aidoo, and the first of her work that I've read. I dog-eared this one heavily. Every page seemed to have something laid out in a way that struck me as so true but which I'd not heard laid out in that way before - the "of course" moment of reading something you've always thought, but haven't thought to say.

Felt disjointed, especially the last part. I enjoyed the poetry parts though.

I found this book gave me a really eye opening non-western perspective on European life and the deep neo-colonial power structures which shape the experiences of migrants, international students and professionals abroad. I did get a little lost at points but that’s probably a reflection on me not the author. Great mix of prose and poetry to tell the narrative which was great! Wish it was more common
