This is one of the most boring books I have ever read. I knew to go in with low expectations since those I have seen read it did not like it, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. I loved Autumn the first book in this series, but I really did not enjoy this. I read this as a quick pick me up since I felt a reading slump coming on and this book just fueled the fire.

"There was this different quality to the light even only four days past the shortest day; the shift, the reversal, from increase of darkness to increase of light, revealed that a coming back of light was at the heart of midwinter equally as much as the waning of light."

It is difficult to comprehend the books in this series, their content and their effect, until you read them for yourself. But let me say that this is so an experience worth having, especially if you yourself have any kind of connection to the aftermath of Brexit and British politics in general.

While I don't think I enjoyed this quite as much as [b:Autumn|28446947|Autumn (Seasonal Quartet, #1)|Ali Smith|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1456560519l/28446947._SY75_.jpg|48572278], I still thoroughly enjoyed diving once again into Smith's writing. Her style is deceptive in that it lulls you along with its seeming mundanity, but to get the most out of the story, you truly do need to pay attention to each and every detail, and when you do, you find a whole world is opened to you.

Speaking of detail, I am curious if
Spoilerthe Danny who was Art's real father is the Daniel Gluck of [b:Autumn|28446947|Autumn (Seasonal Quartet, #1)|Ali Smith|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1456560519l/28446947._SY75_.jpg|48572278],
and I am extraordinarily curious to see if these nuggets or any similar will be connected over the next two books.

Either way, I'm still so excited to continue with this series. I love the concept of it, and the way Smith draws you into the season as much as the story. I can only hope that the rest of my winter reading is this evocative of this time of year.
