a little too Harriet the spy predictable, but some very good elements
This is a sweet book about teenage drama. I passed on it as a read for my beginner French students due to the f-word and sexual innuendo. I did get to sneak it in as a First Chapter Friday, but it's obvious I like this one more than the kids did.
This book was a book my brother recommended and after reading it was good. The storyline was beautiful and I'm glad I read this story. It gives a good message during the whole book and it's definitely something I would recommend to people
3.5 stars. The writing was fab; cutting and such exacting word choice! Norris was incredibly snarky and judgmental but because he’s obviously a teenager, it’s not as off putting as it could be. He’s still likable although my favorite character was Maddie. I wish we got to know the other characters a little more, esp Norris’ relationship with his mom Judith, but I did love the progression of Norris’ friendship with Maddie and Liam in particular. The end kind of surprised me but it works for the book itself.
I thoroughly enjoyed this for many reasons:
1. Dude main character. I want more teenage boy voices in YA.
2. Diversity in ethnicity and sexuality!
3. A main character that is sort of unlikeable. I mean, I can see how people would think he's unlikeable. I think he's just a teenager who has no idea what he's all about and can't see more than 10 minutes into his future. I really liked Norris because, in the end, he did try to change and make for his shitty behavior.
4. I loved the ending. I know not everyone will, but I thought it was great.

It no matter how far I read.

Add this to your “If you like John Green, try...”. Funny, witty, honest. Once you get going with this one, it’s compulsive!
I do have this in my middle school YA collection. While I can handle 8th graders reading this one, it is better suited for a high school audience.

Norris is definitely a flawed and judgy person but I loved his character development and Ben Philippe’s writing style is just hilarious. This made me laugh so much but I was also bawling my eyes out so yupp I enjoyed it.

This was such a fun read - I loved Norris’s snark, and I would have loved to learn more about Liam. I got strong “Travis” from The Serpent King vibes from Liam. This was a solid 4-star read up until the last 60 pages which added some of the depth I’d been missing. I also loved the epilogue (a phrase I rarely, if ever, say) - it offered the truly perfect ending for me.

First off, the dedication for his book is absolutely perfect! Secondly, I went in not expecting a whole lot, but once i got a good way through I went from ????? to ?!?!?!??! to !!!!!!!. It’s a sad process. I also thought Norris was gonna be quite unlikeable(can you really blame me?) but he turned out to be... not horrible! To sum it all up,,, its a very cute coming of age story! I’ll definitely want to read more from this author.
